As someone that has never played the game, I found this video from Max Browne to be very insightful.  He lays out exactly how KJ read the defense on a few critical passing plays from Saturday that set up each other.  Ten minutes long.

As you may recall, Max Browne is an interesting guy that was the recipient of a lot of bad breaks in college after being the consensus #1 rated QB out of high school. He had to deal with Alabama and Stanford in his first few games as the starter and then was replaced by the eventual #2 pick in the draft (Darnold). During his one grad transfer season at Pitt, he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury and couldn’t throw for scouts in the spring. 

But he clearly knows and loves the game, and he seems like a guy that will do well inside or outside of football.  

No, I’m not his PR guy!  I just appreciated the video and now have a little more insight into what to expect when Stanford lines up a certain way...

Sorry, I guess I should have said the #2 QB taken. With all the build-up of Mayfield vs. Darnold, I guess I forgot about Barkley.  He is almost as dynamic and talented as CMac, it seems.  But in any case I haven't followed the NFL since around 2008.  ;-)

Great analysis, and great find! I had picked up on the Stanford defense mixing things up, and in particular, not giving same look after the timeout as before in OT.  But I had not recognized or bothered to notice the Stanford route concepts and how masterful KJ was making the correct reads both pre and post-snap. Very nicely done, and frankly, Browne's work blew the doors off what I saw Joey Galloway do an ESPN last night! All he did was focus on the height of the receivers, giving no mention of the route concepts they ran and how difficult they made things on Oregon defense as a result.

There was also a breakdown of a fantastic route JJAW ran for a big gain down the seam in the first quarter, on a Pac-12 Network video clip.  

It seems we are seeing kind of what I was expecting this season, a definite evolution in Stanford's passing game due to growth in QB, very good WRs, and an OL that is damn good in pass protection.  

If they can just get the damn run game going, the offense will be very tough to stop as we all thought it should be before the season started.

Great video! He could use some better editing, the few random cuts mid-sentence were jarring, but overall quite well done. It's too bad CFB doesn't widely release All-22 (or if they do, that he didn't use it), because these breakdowns are so much better when you can actually see everyone.
