Well, that's not quite right. Stanford tried very hard for JT Daniels and was even believed to be the leader at one point. Obviously he went with SC, which, fine, whatever, you win some, you lose some. The approach post-Daniels was the problem: the coaches seemed to be kicking the tires with a bunch of guys but never got around to offering until Hilinski, deep in the year. It was a worst of all worlds approach and now the team's got a good returning starter in Costello and big question marks with West and Mills. If fortunate, the team might be able to squeeze through without incident. If not, there'll be problems.
The problem with not having a QB in this class isn't with next year, it's with 2020 when the depth chart is Mills, West, and Richardson (if he stays for a fifth year), followed by true freshman McKee and walk-ons. McKee is almost certain to redshirt - Shaw has repeatedly said that it takes at least a full year and often longer to master enough of the offense to be successful at QB.
I really don't understand why one scholarship QB in every class isn't a top priority given the higher uncertainty of development/success and higher risk of injury.
I also don't understand the complete absence of DL either.
