It discusses the only known tape of Super Bowl I, which is owned by a 50-year-old nurse anesthetist in North Carolina.  The NFL has offered him chump change for it and threatened to sue if he sold it to anyone else.  But there's a case to be made that there is no longer copyright protection for the game, since the NFL didn't bother to preserve its own copies.

Perhaps the many lawyers here can weigh in. Isn’t there a statute of limitations on copyrights after x years?

Copyrights are notoriously lengthy (thank you Sonny Bono).  I think in the last few years the copyright on Micky Mouse expired.

For a work created before 1978, it is a 95 year term, so the copyright would expire in 2062.  The issue is that the copyright might no longer be valid based on this requirement for copyright:

Couple things. I have my credential and a program from the first game. Not called the Super Bowl but the NFL/AFL Championship. I was an AC in those days loading film mags for my DP who happened to be my father. NFL Films has all the original footage from the game including all “Outs.”

I am under contract not to discuss football deals but I do have experience with MLB which has bought MLB footage from collectors, producers and camera people. They are tough bargainers and I have refused to sell old footage including original and many production prints. Ergo, baseball is cheap in buying but ridiculous in selling footage with a rate higher than any library that I am aware of. Tried to charge 60 Minutes a rate of $20,000 a minute.

That's $1.2 million, right? Wow.
