I love the fact that we can see virtually every game on the Pac-12 Net on TV directly or streaming. That said, I really resent what they've done to scheduling.

But what inspires this thread is watching right now. It looks as if the Pac-12 net is becoming the Oregon /Sabrina net re WBB. At the end of the Oregon-Washington game, they went nearly 15 minutes past scheduled broadcast time so that they could show the entire Oregon Senior day celebration. I'm not aware of this sort of thing every being done before.

While I would rather they highlight Stanford players, for better or for worse, casual fans might barely know of anyone outside of their own team, and those are the people we hope get more interested in women's college basketball. And for as long as I've been alive, "human interest" stories about the athletes are one way to get people to connect to the sport.  If it brings more fans to WBB, I'm all for it.

+1. Sabrina Ionescu is the best thing to happen to WCBB since at least Breanna Stewart or Maya Moore, and probably all the way back to Diana Taurasi. For reasons fair or unfair, her college sports story arc has penetrated into the rare zone where a WCBB player creates top-of-the-fold headlines in the sports section. Given the unfair perceptions WCBB has had to fight for decades, I'm all for anything that draws interest to the sport....

...ETA: except when it involves breaking her 2k/1k/1k record by defeating Stanford at Maples. That one is going to smart for a while...

I totally agree. I think that Sabrina has been fantastic for women's bb attention -- and I'm all for it. I just thought it was really interesting that the Pac-12 showed the entire senior night ceremony.

Was there any mutual interest between Sabrina and Stanford when she was a recruit?

I recall all the buzz about Shoni a year or two before, but don't recall any buzz about Sabrina. What was her recruiting rank. Amazing that she may end up with 2500+ points, 1200+ assists, and 1100+ rebounds (How many steals does she have?) with a potential 9 games to go in her collegiate career.

We did t really recruit Shoni words from our head coach. Very interested in Sabrina of course but same story which is simply not all can get into Stanford

Please remember many AP classes required not just great grades

On a recent PAC-12 WCBB podcast, the announcers mentioned that Lindsay Gottlieb was dead to rights certain Sabrina was going to go to Cal - her final three were Cal, OSU, and Oregon. As Bob said, was not to be for us. Ionescu was not as hyped then as she is now, by a long stretch. But she was definitely one of the top recruits of her cycle; she settled on a short list of those West Coast schools relatively early, so she did not draw as much national attention as some others.

IIRC, the Shimmel sisters self-hyped their interest in Stanford but I don't remember them even making our medium-lists of prospective recruits. Here's a 2008 story on Shimmel that claimed that "if she had her drothers, she'd go to Stanford" -- apparently her father is an alum. So that's probably where your memories come from.

Ah now the rest of the story.
Stanford coaches certainly were at Sabrina’s games. Sabrina was must see at her travel games playing for a top top travel team. Many many coaches watching

Sabrina played for cal stars. Did any in The last say 6 years go to cal. One Forbes who played just her last year

Did the Moore sisters ? Jones Brink Jump
Jackson Campbell Bamberger ? No

Shoni’s dad played a bit of baseball as a Frosh at Stanford then went home and married his pregnant girl friend. Not a grad

Great documentary on the Shimmels you should watch. The truth is out there

I thought it was a bit much.  Senior night is for the players and their families (and to a lesser extent, the fans who have grown close to them over the years).  Of course, I'm not as big on Ionescu as others are - and I'm plenty high on her as a college basketball all time great.
