For now, they are “full steam ahead” but we shall see.

the '64 Tokyo Olympics were held in October (due to heat). it seems a pushback to that time (if feasible healthwise) would be better than '21.

The 1968 Mexico City games were also held in October (ended on the 27th) and the 1956 Melbourne games were held in November and December (ended on the 8th), so there is nothing sacred about the games having to be held in July. I agree that holding the games some time before the end of 2020 would be far preferable to pushing them to 2021, if prudent from a public health standpoint of course.

The T&F federation has now also asked for a push back
Here’s the big picture training and competition. There is no competition now and when will there be. Plus the great swimmers can’t find open pools. The athletes must be ready to complete at the highest level. And they aren’t even competing now and won’t for months
No delay to later 2020. Time to say 2021

Got to be hundreds of millions in hotel deposits, flights, etc. Athletes not training for competition (probably just fitness currently) and more importantly no way that the virus is gone by July. Should either postpone for a year or simply junked. 1940 and 1944 happened and the world survived without Olympics. ‘80 and ‘84 were Olympics in name only. By July 2021 we may have a vaccine, certainly by 2022. Refunds might just break the Japanese economy.

Agree Bob. As an aside, it was nuts to hold the olympics in Tokyo in July to begin with. As it was, they were going to have restrictions on the marathon, and were going to hold it further north where it would be cooler. Best to plan for either April or September 2021. Would be cool for Tokyo to have it during cherry blossom season.

Seoul Korea in 1988, also held in October

The T&F 2019 World Cup was in Dubai. Marathon started about mid night. Track while not with a closed roof was air conditioned without wind on the track. Friends there said it worked well.
So many venues indoors at the Olympics also

That is absolutely my pet peeve. If they knew in 1964 to avoid the heat and typhoon season and start on October 10, what were these people thinking?

Well now maybe they can hit the reset button and have the games at the right time of year.
My guess is that most places won't give a refund but will allow customers to re-book for the new dates. That's what just happened to us with a tournament we were supposed to play this weekend at Pebble Beach. We got full credit toward next year's tournament or toward a stay later this year.

Interesting story on the Olympics. Yep all due to American television.

Was just smiling over the juxtaposition between the awe-inspiring lack of sanitary conditions at the Rio Olympics and their call to postpone Japan's Olympics. Heh heh heh.

Officials in Japan are discussing it, which given how fast things happen in these times, means we will have an announcement that it is being postponed sometime this week. Interesting they are considering a 2-year postponement.

Canada has announced that it will not send its athletes to the Olympics if they are held this year and has urged them to be delayed by a year. Expect more to come.

The move two years out makes a lot of sense. Ordinarily for the IOC a 2 year delay would not be possible because of the FIFA World Cup. However the 2022 World Cup is in Qatar and will be held later in the 2022 calendar year.

IOC has now officially announced that the games will be postponed. They have not yet said to when, or for how long. But Japanese PM Abe did at last admit that holding the games at this point as planned was not feasible.
