Fascinating article about how the response to pandemics became policy in the George W. Bush administration.  Also, interesting how big of a difference shutting down schools makes in the models.

The outcome of their research was startling. By closing the schools in a hypothetical town of 10,000 people, only 500 people got sick. If they remained open, half of the population would be infected.

I have a feeling the effect is possibly even greater for COVID-19 given the degree to which children can be asymptomatic, which means an entire school can become exposed and infectious before you can see the results of the outbreak in parents and grandparents.
