Apologies if someone has already posted about this in an earlier thread, but only now, in LATE MAY, did I finally sit down to look at the football schedule. Maybe I looked at it in January, but this is the first time since March I've even thought about trying to think about this season. It feels a little surreal.
So I'm gonna mark everything about this season (IIH) for If It Happens. And yes, I know, there are bigger things happening in the world than football. But you know, it can be a good thing to look forward to things, even if only hoping.
Week 1 - Bye - Why why why? Needed that extra week to prepare for William & Mary? If the season ends early, this will be just one fewer game to get to play.
Week 2 - William and Mary. You know, in previous years, I might've griped about a Davis-esque first game, but if it's on, I think I will be thrilled just to get to watch a game.
Week 3- at Arizona. I think the negative of getting the Wildcats early is the fact that it'll be even hotter in Tucson in September. Presumably, a night game.
Week 3 - USC (#13 ESPN). At least it's at home. Weirdly, in the Covid-era, I'm like -- good, it's a CA-based team -- so it's less likely there will be sickness issues. Typing this still feels surreal. At least they will be pre-pulverized by Alabama. Seemed to work out pretty well in 2016.
Week 4 - at UCLA. This is going to be a brutal 1-2. Will Chip Kelly once again lead a program with Stanford's number?
Week 5- BYE- Yes! This is actually a great time for a bye!
Week 6- at Notre Dame (#9 ESPN). Well, this is an extra bummer year to travel all the way to South Bend. The only positives I can think of are, 1) we have a bye the previous week, and 2) at least the trip to South Bend is in October, before flu season...
Week 7- Wazoo. Without Leach. It'll be nice to be back home after two away games. I think this was supposed to be Homecoming game, but there is no Homecoming Reunion.
Week 8- at Oregon (#14 ESPN). What will it be like playing at Autzen Stadium when you can hear the crickets chirping?
Week 9 Oregon State. It's on the Friday before Halloween.
Week 10- at Washington (#29 ESPN). ESPN pegs us as #28, so I guess we might be favored. Again, it feels almost inconsiderate to mention this, but it might be a good year to be playing at the usually-deafening Husky Stadium.
Week 11 - Colorado
Week 12 - At Cal (#30 ESPN). Man, I hope we get to play Big Game. I mean, the Covid case counts in the Bay Area are lower than most everywhere else in the US. If that keeps up, maybe we can just play Cal, San Jose, Menlo College and USF (do the Dons have a football team?).
Week 13 - BYU. I for one like this here. I like playing a major-brand college. They'll make Stanford play quality football, which would be a good prep for the post season, if Stanford returns to its winning ways, and if there's a post season.
Week 14 - Pac 12 Championship Game in Las Vegas. I'm gonna put this here because I am thinking positive.
