It seems to me that we should think of it as Mike and Will plus an edge and EITHER a second edge or a Sam. That's because we'll typically be in nickel I would think. That means that if your front seven math is adding up to seven, that's one too many on probably a majority of plays. There will be plays with different configurations of course (e.g., two DL, two edge, a Sam, a Mike, and a Will without a nickel back) but if we're talking about the base defense, it's cheating to have the positions add up to 12 and I think it's more accurate to assume five DBs on a play than four.

the only game that i've attended at Stanford Stadium in this century was last year's Utah game.  and i really don't want to see another game like that, either in person or on tv.  so naturally, i'm hoping that we sign as many 3-star-plus defensive linemen as we can get our hands on.  

i'm concerned that a future opponent will use Utah's straightforward strategy of running the ball on as many plays as possible.  if that happens, then we should have the option of rotating linemen in and out as often as we feel like.  not that we should necessarily do that, but it would be nice to have the option.

Beyond this year it could get really ugly. 2023 depends on retention, although the size of the incoming class we're recruiting suggests we're building in assumptions of high attrition like last year. Miezan and Mangum-Farrar are currently in their fifth years but could return (and actually would be plausible candidates for seventh years). Next year would be Damuni's fifth (but seventh since high school due to the mission, risk of wanting to move on with life, transfer elsewhere for a different experience, etc.) as well as Sinclair's fifth. Right now I don't really have any idea on who, if any, return from that quartet. 2023 depends on that question. Personally, I think expecting these guys to be around in 2024 or later is highly unrealistic. For that reason, Dubre becomes one of the most important players on the roster nobody talks about, but we're going to need multiple from a rogues' gallery to step up.

He’s not such a highly rated recruit, but he has a number of good offers. 247 says he’s an edge player, but his smaller frame seems more suited to playing in coverage. I hope he ends up being part of the solution. Not sure  where Stanford gets a run stopping LB other than Su’a in this class, but I guess I need to subscribe to a service for that.

Just speculation, but not completely unfounded as I know some of these guys. I wouldn't hold your breath on getting Miezan for a 6th year. Sinclair will probably come back for a 5th though.
