I wouldn't get too carried away yet.
It is unclear to me that the test is suitable for use with "high throughput" testing machines. Those usually require a cartridge/kit from the manufacturer. Not requiring specialized plasticware to take the sample, and not requiring skilled people to take the sample is a big plus. However, if the resulting test must be run on the smaller PCR machines, people like Quest probably will not be interested. Too manpower intensive.
This test may have many advantages, but we shouldn't expect too much too soon.

I’m inclined to agree with goose here. Lab testing is all about logistics, much less so about technology. This test helps with only a small portion of that (drawing the sample), but the bulk of the cost, in both time and money, is not in the test itself, but in the logistics around what happens between when the sample is taken from the patient, and the result is reported back.

I am excited by this an any other incremental advance that can help blunt the impact of COVID. I'll be watching this board and other sources in the coming weeks for more information on roll-out timing and logistics.

If Holmes was just a couple years later with her product, she'd probably be sitting on a lot of government money right about now to try and make her machine work for covid testing.

This thought should give pause to all of us about what is going on during this outbreak. Lots of very questionable decisions will be made. It is an inevitable consequence of the uncertainty we all face. Another reason to be more prepared at all levels in the future.
