Michigan is playing Minn. ABC. A player is out. Announcer says team doesn’t release the reason “but we do believe it’s Covid related”. Awful. A violation of the young man’s privacy. No reason to make that statement.

Their intention probably was to indicate the player won't by out of action for all that long because it is not a major injury. They could have worded it leaving out the word Covid. However I do hear and read all the time about players in all sports being out due to Covid. So you probably will have to declare the entire sports media, both college and pro, awful.

Speaking of Michigan...
Harbaugh has clearly modernized his offense. The Michigan QB Milton has a freaking cannon for an arm and can run too.

But I think usually the player consents to release. I fail to see why it’s not a HIPPA violation to release the info without the players permission. I remember when Alex Dickerson had the false positive. Neither the Giants nor the league released his name. But Bob Knightingale reported not only that it was Dickerson, but that he’d been with friends. His wife was about to deliver a child. Dickerson had not been with friends. When it came out he was negative, he spoke about how that false report had greatly upset him and his wife.
We do not have a “right” to know. And players, to my knowledge, do not waive their HIPPA rights.

Lex, you are a lawyer. You should know that HIPPA only applies to “covered entities” and that a sportscaster is not a covered entity. It doesn’t make it any less of a privacy violation, but it is not a violation of HIPPA (or FERPA, which covers students, for that matter).

Not my area. But you are right I should have known that.

Minor nit: It's HIPAA, not HIPPA. It stands for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. HIPAA.

I don't see a cannon for an arm. A lot of dink and dunk and YAC. Side arm delivery.

Those highlights don't demonstrate the throws I saw that made me take notice of Milton's arm. He threw one pass just before Halftime, that traveled 50 yards in the air with only his arm, no windup. He also threw some other darts that made me take notice.

Harballs and Michigan are fodder for contempt on this board. No matter the reason.

If he said that "we believe it is a sprained knee", would that be awful? I don't really see what is sensitive about catching or having COVID-19.

However, what DOES bother me a lot is an announcer saying "We think ..." without qualifying the reasons we should believe what they are saying. Is it just idle speculation, something the ball boy told a beer vendor, or is it based on anything more reliable? Announcers think a lot of things that are just plain incorrect. Happens all the time. If it is about the game in progress, that is kind of their job, so we can accept a certain degree of "error". Player health doesn't come under that umbrella. The fact is the player is unavailable. Why the player is unavailable isn't part of the announcers job unless he really knows. What he "believes" doesn't matter and shouldn't be stated.(10-24-2020, 05:08 PM)lex24 Wrote: Michigan is playing Minn. ABC. A player is out.
