My entire life I have known the country of my birth to be the best of all others. The best and biggest economy. The best and brightest universities. The most powerful military. Elite science and technology. And on and on.

But now I have to look to countries like New Zealand and Australia, who don't have near the resources, technological sophistication, and scientific horsepower as the U.S., and see this. Good for Australia, but this is like Alabama Football finishing last in the SEC West. Not acceptable!

The U.S. would have less than 700 active cases if as competent as Australia. Today, Santa Clara County alone had over 800 new ones reported.

Talked with a good friend who studied at USC, worked with me in research on East Coast, and then moved to Australia (Melbourne).  He went to see Tenet in a movie theater with his wife who is a doc.  They've had the virus under control for a while.  I've seen tweets of packed concerts.  He said the stuff they had to do in the beginning would never have been accepted in US.  There was a breakdown in their strict border control:

There's a little distortion here. 

Australia responded as drastically as it did to the SECOND wave, after having experienced its own resurgence. The US is responding (more belatedly that it should, to be sure) to our second wave.

How normal is normal, I am not sure, because the Australian Open has been postponed three weeks due to restrictions and quarantine.

Finally, Australia is in the Southern hemisphere. It's summer there.

In NSW at least, things are "pretty normal" according to the people I do business with. Everybody is at work, even people who could actually work from home.  The "second wave" was almost totally confined to Victoria. The legalities of all that were pretty interesting. Melbourne had a 112 day shutdown. Travel to/from Victoria was prohibited.

Australia never had anything like the number of cases we had here (in either wave) and was able to stamp out the virus in their country almost (but not absolutely) totally. That makes operating the country in an "normal" situation reasonable. Their challenge is to keep the virus out. It still isn't easy to travel in or out of the country. Take a look at
