Yeager was the first autobiography I ever read as a high school lad. Many great tales. The movie The Right Stuff, which is one of my all-time favorite films, incorporates a lot of things from the book, which has made it live on for me.
The X-1 is one of the most romanticized stories of aviation history. Chuck Yeager will always be synonymous with that incredible breakthrough in the history of flight. That he broke his ribs falling off a horse and needed a broom handle to close the hatch the next day when he broke the sound "barrier," is the stuff of legend.
Amazing that he lived to 97. Off we go into the wild blue yonder...
