I mean, on the one hand, it is awesome.  On the other hand, this is not a trend I think Stanford wants to be a part of, and I think there is probably a straight line between facilities like this being the price of entry into elite Div I athletics and a backlash against making these expenditures at Stanford.  The line "we are not Nebraska" may have been somewhat silly at the time, but was probably prescient.  We are not Oregon, and I don't think we should be.

I actually was not that impressed and it didn’t leave me shaking in my boots.

It is a beautiful building, well designed, well integrated with its surroundings. I think what was the most worrisome was the number of fan seats. If other schools can consistently put more fans in seats to watch athletes compete, that’s often a competitive disadvantage for Stanford. But Stanford has always done surprisingly well because many athletes understand Stanford is a smaller, private school, and some of their classmates won’t be in the stands because they’re busy starting the next Google or focusing their research, and a lot of high school seniors want those kinds of classmates for their friends and for their network for life.

As for the inside of the building, the details and expenditure were impressive, but I also kept thinking how at Oregon they have to have those indoor training spaces because it rains so much there. And I have to say, some of those training nooks and crannies will not be pleasant places in the cold of an Oregon winter.

It’ll be dark and drafty, with a lack of natural air, and it will start to smell. There is a reason why so many sports are played outdoors, and there is a reason why so many top athletic programs are in clear, sunny places like California, Texas and Florida.

Honestly if you compared that video against the video of soccer Coach Gunn carting around campus, I think Stanford comes out favorably for athletes who want to train outdoors, walk on a beautiful campus, and get an exceptional education.

This is sui generis. It's for Oregon track, the home of Pre's trail and the "track and field capital of the world."  And it's Phil Knight paying back the men who were indispensable to his company's success, Bill Bowerman and Steve Prefontaine. This explains the level of investment from Knight and no doubt others who held/hold large blocks of swoosh stock (e.g., Tinker Hatfield, long time head of design and former Duck pole vaulter.)

This is so much more than college track & field, this was built with the nation and the world in mind. This is America's home field for national and international track & field events. Sure it is an advantage for the U of O but Eugene and Hayward Field has been the epicenter of American track & field for many years. This benefits all of us who love track & field.

I liked the old Hayward. Went to US Olympic trials there in 08-12-16. Also competed there in masters track in early 2000s. Hallowed ground. Duck$/Nike U. have so much money but not a single Nobel winner who won on their faculty!
