Stanford's women's soccer team closed out the regular season today with a 3-1 victory over Cal. They finished the regular season with a record of 12-5-1, 4th place in the P12. Not quite the level we have become used to. 4 of the 5 losses were to #6 Duke, #7 UNC, #3 UCLA and #8 USC. Their best wins were over Santa Clara and WSU, both top 20 teams.
The team has shown that they can play with the best teams in the country but not yet for a full game. They gave up 2nd half or OT game winners in each of the 4 losses to ranked teams. And they failed to hold 2-0 2nd half leads twice, vs. both Colorado and USC.
The NCAA tournament field will be announced Monday at 1:30 pm pacific. For those who follow soccer closer than I do, is Stanford in line for a top 16 seed (so they can at least host a game or two)?
