One of the main differences between men's and women's basketball is the ability of the men to transfer horizontal momentum of a drive to the basket into verticality at the rim. Many women put the ball up too hard because of this and it clangs off the backboard and the rim. If you go watch a girls high school game, you'll see that nearly half of the break away lay ups are missed. Instead of doing a half-speed layup drill, they should practice sprinting at the basket before shooting.
