The Championship is still playing , but who cares? I've moved on. I've mourned the loss of The Hulls and Wilson, but it's exciting to contemplate a bright future. With that in mind, I was checking what is in store for our competition in 2022-23. I compiled a summary of who left, who stayed, and who's coming for 15 of the contenders (I'm between seasons and don't have a life)
Major Rebuild
LSU - Kim Mulkey needs another rebuild. She lost the 6 top scorers from last season. Hannah Gusters a 6'5" (junior in 23) is the most experienced returning player. She averaged 13.7 minutes per game. Incoming #26 a 5'10 G, #58 a 6-2 forward. I wouldn't bet against Mulkey, but a top 15 finish would be worthy of another Coach of the Year award.
Michigan - Leigh Brown back for a fifth year, but three starters gone including All-American Naz Hillman. Incoming #48 Forward and #99 Guard
Baylor - Losing NaLyssa Smith potential #1 pick in the WNBA draft. Their top two scorers are gone and four of the top six scorers are gone. Incoming #17 Wing and#41 Wing
Louisville - Losing Engstler, Dixon, Hall, Robinson and Kianna Smith. Ahlana Smith coming back for a fifth year. Three starters and the first two off the bench are gone. Haley Van Lith coming back, but not much else. Incoming #35 Forward, #38 G, #57 Post, #78 Wing
North Carolina State - Losing All-American Elissa Cunane, three starters, and four of the top six players. Worse yet, zero ESPN Top 100 recruits.
Hopeful
Texas - Losing three starters but the two top scorers are coming back, Rori Harmon and Aliyah Mathorn - Guess what - Harmon is not the top scorer!
Incoming#34 Wing, #63 F, #67 G
Ohio State - Losing 1 starter and the 6th man. Returning top two scorers. #2 scorer Taylor Mikesell staying a fifth year. Incoming #23 Wing
Indiana - Losing three starters who all averaged 11+ points. Top two scorers return. Holmes and Berger who is coming back for a fifth year. Incoming #68 G
Tennessee - Losing 2 starters including Rae Burrell. Senior Jordan Walker is coming back for a fifth year. Star guard Jordan Horston back from injury. Incoming #11 Wing
Nothing but Upside
Iowa - Returning 7 of the top 8 players. Caitlin Clark headlines. Monica Czinano returns for a fifth year. She averaged 21.2. Incoming #45 Wing, #76 Forward, and #89 G
Maryland - All four seniors are returning. Not losing anyone. Hope they don't improve. Incoming #60 G
North Carolina - Losing only one player on the team. A senior starter who was their fifth leading scorer (Hey, if you have to lose someone - just saying) Incoming #27 Point Guard
Reloading
UConn - Losing Juhasz, Nelson-Ododa, Westbrook and Williams. Returning Bueckeers, Fudd, Ducharme, Edwards, Muhl. Incoming #4 Wing and #5 Post. A lot of talent gone - no problem
South Carolina - Losing two starters - Destanni Henderson, and Saxton. Incoming #12 Post and #18 PG
