Barger led a criminal enterprise that for several decades dealt in heroin, cocaine, meth, illegal guns, violence, and murder. Early in his career he and his associates made a practice of beating the crap out of anti-Vietnam War protesters, and they also killed someone at the infamous Altamont concert while threatening the Rolling Stones at gunpoint to continue playing. Barger spent a number of years in prison, but not nearly enough. He beat the living crap out of his third wife (he had four), breaking a few bones and lacerating her spleen, for which he spent a total of eight days in jail. Not a serious offense, I guess. There is much more. Anyway, if you want to lionize this scumbag as some kind of American hero, be my guest. It’s a free country, theoretically.

Barger claimed that he stuck a gun in Keith Richard’s ribs to force the Stones to keep playing (noted in several sources including his London Times obit). So, you calling Sonny liar? And FWIW I wasn’t arguing about anything. There isn’t exactly a pro and con as to whether Barger was a poor excuse for a human being. I was just wondering aloud why Phogge considered his death worthy of notice on a Stanford sports site.

No. I was the cameraman. Looking through an old night intensifier on a CP 16 film camera. We were warned not to go there by the FBI. Story was about the old roach coach/drug trade in Oakland and the South Bay and the DOJ’s case against the Angels late 70’s. Some cool stuff following the coaches in blacked out vans and in Tyler mount helos.

Majors' dealing arms to the mob. Then us getting followed by Teamster goons at La Costa while trying to get film of Fred Fitzsimmons. Brian took us to the best places. And on and on...
