The state of college football these days has killed my passion for the sport, but that doesn't mean I don't find the gamesmanship and musical chairs endlessly fascinating. This story from Dennis Dodd makes it sound like UO, UW, Cal, and Stanford could be targets for a much sooner than anticipated second expansion that would kill the Pac for good.

What really makes it interesting is the seeming wholesale lack of interest in what this is all about - football - from Stanford, and how college football seems to be veering further away from what Stanford wants to participate in.  Disclaimer: This assessment that Stanford doesn't want to be a part of major college football any longer is largely based on what people on this board say about not wanting to participate in it and abject silence on the topic from any Stanford leaders. Still we all could be wrong and Stanford will gladly make some compromises to rake in $25M-$50M more than it ever could in the Pac, but nobody knows this for sure and it remains a mystery where Stanford stands. 

Putting Stanford's seeming ambivelence aside, it almost seems like these four schools have some real leverage and should sign some sort of suicide pact that unless they are all invited none will move to Big Ten, and use that for some leverage to boost their payouts.

I hope the Pac 12 doesn’t collapse. I really do think it’s bad for the student athletes and a disadvantage for west coast teams due to the increased travel.

And in the long run, it’ll be harmful to west coast sports overall. No Big 5 west coast conference could mean fewer west coast fans following college sports, fewer west coast kids learning about and ultimately participating in youth sports, and eventually, team sports becoming less and less of a thing on the west coast.

I like that Governor Newsom is trying to use what leverage he has with UCLA. Beyond all the dollars, the collapse of the Pac—12 will hurt sports in California.

If there is a western division of the Big Ten with 6 teams, I think that's the best of both worlds. Still play the majority of your games on the west coast (5 division games plus 2 home games vs cross division rivals and whatever non-conference home games you have), access to survival and more money.

By far the best outcome for the top West Coast sports programs, including Stanford, is for enough of them to join the Big 10 that the distance actually isn't that tyrannical as we're mostly playing our normal geographic footprint anyway.

The Big Ten already has three of the four TV windows locked up (Pacific Time - morning, early afternoon, late afternoon/early evening).  They are interested in securing the fourth window - night.  The answer to that is adding four teams from the Pacific Coast into the fold.  That would give the Big Ten quality games in every window.  The night games would be an add on to the current contracts via a streaming service.  

If (a big if), the streaming service pays a sufficient amount to offset the hit to the existing B10 schools that would occur by adding new members, it could happen.  The key, I think, is what kind of share would the new members receive - it would probably require less than a full share initially to balance the current Big Ten members books (keeping in mind a less than full share will probably still be more than the P10 will be paying out in full shares after their new TV contract).

on other soft factor at least for Stanford and call is that the Bay Area has on of the biggest populations of Big 10 alums in the country which gives the Universities a chance for some sort of in-person event at, or around, a football weekend in the bay area

Except the distance will be tyrannical for a non-trivial number of games, if not for football, then for basketball, volleyball, and all the other sports where you can’t just play most of your games within your division.  Obviously more teams out west moves the geographic center of the conference westward, but per 538, “ The distance from Los Angeles to the geographic center of the Big Ten is a whopping 1,621 miles.”

This is nuts. It’s one thing to make professional athletes fly coast to coast routinely for games. It’s another thing to make college athletes, who are ostensibly students, do it. Just once, I would like to see the powers that be in collegiate athletics make a decision to forgo more money to further the academic interests of the student athletes in their charge. What we need is fewer games, more student friendly game times, less travel, and more of an opportunity for the student athletes to, you know, do what they are supposedly in college to do.
