Good point, Mt, and this had all the hallmarks of something that sounded true but wasn’t (”truthiness” in Colbert’s term).

I’ll comment. This has nothing to do with the wishes of African--Americans and everything to do with white guilt ridden quasi intellectuals that have a need to take useless measures so they can feel better about themselves. 

It’s flipping absurd.

Having said that I’m hoping the Niners shine on the practicum tomorrow…..

According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, the term “field work” can be traced back to 1767 in uses meaning “gathering statistics or doing research out-of-doors or on-site.” Merriam-Webster’s website says the term’s first-known use was in 1686, to mean “a temporary fortification thrown up by an army in the field.”

So, not slavery related.  What's next?  Maybe they'll ban the word "cultivate" and the term  "sow seeds."  

BTW, do these idiots think that the only people that ever worked in agricultural field were slaves or immigrants.  If so, I've got news for them.  They're wrong.  As a matter of fact, I'll bet that more field work was performed in the USA over it's history by non-minorities than by slaves or immigrants.

I'm out in a practicum office (double wide baby!) two to five days a week depending on what's going on out in the practicum as we try to bring this hundo million dollar puppy in on time (i.e. by fall 2023). Hint: the rain ain't helping. It is major infrastructure with lots of earth already moved and a bit left over to deal with before half the site shuts down on Feb. 1, and as you might imagine, it is really, really muddy out in the practicum right now. This is why I spent MLK day, which our office observes, out in the practicum, because precipitation-free days have been awfully rare lately.  Or since it is a 6.5 mile long linear project made up of hundreds of individual sites, would that be practica?

I'll be sure to correct my cohorts out here, a mix of construction managers, engineers, carpenters, masons, iron workers, operators and laborers when they ask me to take the ATV out to meet them in the field to figure some ess out, presently in the mud.  They are a very diverse bunch. I'm sure they will express their appreciation for my sensitivity. I'll probably get a cool new nickname.

There is nothing righteous about this.  Nor is it an act of moral leadership.  It’s divisive.  It’s absurd. It trivializes. But I’m sure the department feels so much better about itself…. Gotta do something to make that $115,000 online masters mill program stand out.

Edit- while walking my dog in the practicum, I came to recognize my insensitivity. My mind then drifted to the Niner game. The Cowboys are concerning because they practicum a well balanced team. Good running and passing game and a solid defense - with a superstar in Micah Parsons. Niners will have to know where he is on the practicum at all times. I was unsure, however, who practicums punts for Dallas.

My mind then wandered to the Giants and the difficulties they had practicuming in. ‘22. They simply aren’t good practicumers. With the exception of Crawford. He has one 4 gold gloves for his excellent practicuming over the years.


I then thought of all those named baseball and football fie … um practicums out there. We must immediately get rid of those names and any reference to them. For example, the Brooklyn Dodgers did not play at Ebbets Field. They played at Ebbets Practicum.

I thank the USC Practicum Department for helping me understand me prior insensitivity in using that word.

I will happily practicum any questions you have…..

It’s a trigger for Irish- Americans. If your name is Jerry, please change it. German-Americans are hurt by that name. Limes? Gotta find a new word. Too close to Limey. And I’ll leave it to those that work with amphibians to find a new word for Frogs.

When I first started out on the Cardboard, it was "MickthePaddy" so I shortened it.  Didn't want to offend my fellow members of the Irish diaspora. Also, though we have no German background and it is a French name, "Jerome" is a family name through the generations. I'll inform my granddad (Stanford '42, PO in WWII, went by "Jerry") that he needs to change it... ;)
