Outside Topic Matt Weiss being investigated

Quote:Michigan co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss has been placed on leave, according to an athletic department spokesman, as the school's police department told ESPN it is investigating a "report of computer access crimes" that occurred in December at the team's football facility.
Huh, wonder what that means.

Apropos nothing, Harbaugh is returning to Michigan

I think that along with Shaw, he interviewed for the Denver job.
The fact remains that we’ve seen this song no dance before.

I wonder whether it has something to do with the NCAA investigation, perhaps an attempt to clean up some records. From same article:
Quote:Earlier this month, Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel confirmed that the department received a draft of notice of allegations from the NCAA "regarding the football program." A source told the Free Press the violations were Level II against the program for recruiting and coaching violations and Level I against Harbaugh for lying or misleading NCAA investigators.

If he was trying to, or did, alter digital records that could expose MI to recruiting violations, is it plausible that JH was not aware of his actions?
Put a glide in your stride and a dip in your hip.

If a "computer access" problem happened in December and is still being investigated, I would doubt the NCAA could move fast enough to have such a notice in early January. I could believe (but have NO reason to accuse) that it was known in December that a NCAA notice was imminent, which could be a reason someone might want to peek at emails, documents or records or even to change them.
It is probably best to let the wheels turn and wait to see what they expose, if anything.
Heck, they may find that two separate expense receipts were photocopied onto the same page, with a boundary line that is visible if you crank the contrast as high as possible.

Could also be completely unrelated to the NCAA, no? Like, maybe he was using computers to host or access inappropriate material, or maybe he logged into someone else's computer or email account for personal reasons (eg stalking).

Yes I assumed it was most likely not related to the recruiting infractions. Note that THE POLICE are investigating, not the NCAA or the university itself.
A while ago, a teacher from my old high school was arrested when a scan of his computer turned up “inappropriate images.”
Eventually presumably the facts will come out, but it sounds more serious than NCAA rules violations, or even steps to cover up rules violations. Has anyone ever been charged criminally for NCAA violations where the act itself wasn’t illegal?

Instead of WAGs, one could follow the links in the ESPN article.
Also,
Hmmm... which one of those 4 violations is one that Harbaugh might plead that he couldn't remember. Or was there something else that he couldn't remember.
Quote:...a report of computer access crimes that occurred at Schembechler Hall during December 21-23, 2022, ... An entry from the university police's online daily crime log on Jan. 5 notes that police received a report about "fraudulent activity involving someone accessing university email accounts without authorization" at Schembechler Hall. It is the only report of police activity at the football facility in the past month.
Also,
Quote:The NCAA delivered a draft of a notice of allegations earlier this month citing the four Level II violations. They include meeting with two recruits during a COVID-19 dead period, texting a recruit outside of an allowable time period, having analysts perform on-field coaching duties during practice and having coaches watching players work out via Zoom, according to sources
Quote:During an attempt to expedite the case and achieve a "negotiated resolution," Harbaugh refused to acknowledge that he had lied to NCAA investigators, a source confirmed. He has maintained that he doesn't remember the incident in question, which has led to a standstill in the case.

My WAG was that “maybe he logged into someone else's computer or email account for personal reasons (eg stalking).” Which seems pretty close.

I still don’t see how the recruiting violations necessarily directly tie to the police investigation. If indeed Weiss is being investigated for fraudulent access of email accounts, it could have been related to the recruiting scandal, it could not. Maybe as they investigated the recruiting they audited computer activities and stumbled across something else.
You could use unauthorized email access in ways to affect the case — maybe he attempted to delete people’s emails, or erase evidence, or impersonate a university official. But none of that has been stated yet. So maybe he used unauthorized email access to catfish someone, or to access someone’s bitcoin, or anything..
But the details make it clear it was something big — the police searched his home then parked police cars outside to monitor him. I don’t think they did that just because he had unauthorized Zoom calls with recruits to watch them practice. I don’t even think they’d do that if he deleted someone’s emails about a recruiting visit.
