A few notes.

Muir's message acknowledges that collegiate athletics is not an even playing field with NIL and transfers. But Stanford will continue to abide by the letter and spirit of the rules.

In practice, however, the NIL era has ushered in a new level of involvement by boosters and other interested parties in recruiting and retaining student-athletes. While NCAA rules continue to prohibit the use of NIL payments for recruitment or inducement purposes, conflicting state NIL laws and other forces have led to a total lack of enforcement. We are hopeful that this enforcement void will be filled in the near future.

In the meantime, here at Stanford we will continue to abide by the letter and spirit of the rules by which we are governed. Despite what we are witnessing across the country, including a concerning level of transfer portal activity that appears to be related, in many cases, to impermissible NIL activity, our energy will remain focused on providing the best possible educational and athletic experience for the thousands of remarkable young people who aspire to pursue excellence at the highest level while proudly wearing the Block S.

He also talks about Stanford's conference affiliation. I infer that Stanford is still open to, maybe even actively pursuing, an invitation to the Big 10.

More recently, on June 30, 2022, USC and UCLA announced their intention to depart the Pac-12 and join the Big Ten in the summer of 2024. Both schools have acknowledged that this decision was motivated, to a large extent, by the incremental television revenue they expect to receive in the Big Ten. Since that day, I have been in constant communication with President Tessier-Lavigne, Provost Drell, members of the Board of Trustees and other campus leaders. All of us, along with our colleagues across the Pac-12, have been working tirelessly to monitor and evaluate numerous options and scenarios. While we work to solidify a vibrant future for the Pac-12, we are also cognizant that we must prepare for every possibility. We owe it to our former, current and future student-athletes, as well as to our entire community, to be the best Stanford Athletics we can be regardless of the composition of our conference.

Finally, Stanford Athletics was $11.5M in the red last year. This was covered by a withdrawal from the DAPER Investment Fund and increased funding from the university. This situation of course is not sustainable. Take a look at the numbers on page 6 and imagine what the financial picture would look like with $60M or $80M or $100M in Broadcast Revenues instead of $27.82M.

The uncertainties around future TV revenue makes long-term financial planning difficult.  There will be a deal reached sometime in 2023 for 2024 and beyond.  But when in 2023, who knows?

On the upside, over 200M people watch Amazon Prime, which blows away subscriber numbers of the Pac-12 Network. For football, it won’t be a problem, and a partnership with Amazon might even help the conference gain a stronger following abroad.

I personally don't like the prospects of a deal with  Amazon Prime.  ESPN is directed toward sports fans and IMO is the best platform for recruiting and overall conference publicity. 

In regard to Stanford looking at the Big 10, that's currently not an option from what I've read the past week.  The "experts" say the Big-10 has put expansion on hold including Notre Dame.  As crazy as it seems, they say off-and-on backroom talks between the Big-12 and Pac-12/10 continue.  It's hard to separate speculation from rumors with some substance behind them.
