Stanford is well ahead (1150 - 875) going into the last evening of the PAC-12 Swimming & Diving championships.   Catch it on PAC-12 Bay Area at 6PM. Although this event is a warm-up for the top swimmers, there have been some quite good times posted.

I really can't do justice to the swimmers without writing a long post, but I don't have time.  (For instance, how many realize that two of our current swimmers were part of a world record relay this past December?)  

But tune in, to catch them at the PAC-12 championships. 
The NCAA championships will be Mar 15-18, yet again in a place far away.

The top swimmers put up times in an early season meet at NC State that qualified them for NCAAs, and therefore they were probably not rested/shaved for Pac-12s.  But Stanford had a number of other swimmers that needed this meet to register a time that would get them invited to the NCAAs, and for me, this is the most interesting element of the meet.  An invite requires that in their best event, a swimmer puts up a time that falls within the top 37 or so among those who plan to swim the event at NCAAs.  Since some individuals have top times in multiple events -- and can only swim three at NCAAs -- a top 40 time is a pretty safe bet to be invited.

Once a swimmer reaches the threshold for an invitation, they can swim other races for which they have B qualifying time, which is relatively easy to meet for those with a top time in another event.




All of the other conference meets have been swum, so the Pac-12 swimmers have a good sense of what it takes to qualify.  (A few additional top times may be attained in "last chance meets" but it's always a small number.)

As to Stanford swimmers, I counted four who should make NCAAs on the basis of the Pac-12 meet, including three that accomplished that goal today, the final day of the meet.  Not easy, because they have to be tired.  In particular, I believe that Sam Tadder will make in on the basis of her 400 IM, Natalie Manion and Alex Crisera in 200 Back, and Allie Raab in the 200 breast.

For those so interested, here is a website that tracks the top times, which appears to have been updated about a week ago.  It should soon include the results of this weekend's meet.
