As I see it we are in many  trying now to integrate bikes into a society where only cars used to exist in any quantity.  Many drivers get very irritated being forced to share their 4000 lb metal ride with that 20 lb piece aluminum next to them.  It is like trying to mix cats and dogs.  If you really want to ride and stay out of traffic, take your bike and go to Holland, more than 20,000 miles of traffic free bike lanes.

Just like no bicyclist wants to be forced to share their path with someone pushing a stroller or walking 3 abreast.

Worst IMO are the walker with the little dog on a long leash that likes to do nothing better but to run in front of you and whose owner is clueless.

There is no excuse for a driver to "not see" a bike on the roadway.

I'm similarly biased as a long time cyclist and motorcycle rider who has had to take evasive action many times to save myself from oblivious and irresponsible drivers. But in this case I find it hard to fault the driver, and Buddy was in fact the one cited by police. He was attempting to cross A1A, perpendicular to traffic, not in a marked crossing zone, at night (an hour after sunset) with no lights, and not wearing any reflective clothing. The driver was going 50 in a 45 zone, and was ruled not to be impaired.

It's a horrible tragedy but in this instance I can't blame the driver or expect her to have avoided an accident, based on what's been reported.

Yes, in this case, it certainly does not seem like it’s the drivers fault. Brutal situation. I admit that I got slightly off topic because of how important I think bicycle safety is and how important I think bicycle riding is. Many of my comments are about Biking in general, and there are clearly numerous instances of unsafe bicyclists. I do not think this is the norm.

But getting it back to the original point, really sad for Buddy Teevens and I hope he will be able to move forward with an engaging and productive life.

School just got out, lots of traffic, and a kid was on an electric bike doing about 40 in the bike lane, of course on the wrong side of the road. Ugh.
