Watching the PGA tournament yesterday, I noticed that Nick Dunlap, an Alabama sophomore was wearing Addidas apparel and a had a TaylorMade bag. I had never seen a college amateur wearing “professional” apparel at a PGA event before and guessed it was an NIL deal.
This morning I read that Addidas has made some very wise NIL investments. In addition to Dunlap, they signed a couple of Stanford products - Zhang (who has since turned pro) and Thorbjornsen (who finished 11th at the Dubai Classic yesterday). Also, Addidas signed Ludvig Aberg (who later turned pro) when he was at Texas Tech.
I can’t say NIL always works the way it should but in the world of golf, NIL is being done right and is quite effective.
