Duke just defeated Cal 72-38 this eve. Cal with 31 TO's. 31??? Only saw the last 5 min so don't know how this happened.

Coach Kara Lawson is clearly emphasizing defense. Duke has the #1 SOS so far, but the opponents average 51.4 pt/gm, 35% FG, 23% 3FG%, 12.6 st/gm, +6.2 TO margin. Ouch.
Duke played a full-court player-to-player tight defense. (How tight? Imagine if the Hulls had quintets instead of twins.) No easy inbounds for Cal after a Duke score. If you put 4 in the back court to bring the ball up, there are 4 defenders on them. Stanford's inbound plays will be tested. I think Stanford needs to use Agara on them.
Cal was rushing it as a result. Passes were either deflected by the defense or Cal attempted too quick a pass. A team won't get many assists against this defense. Cal didn't seem to be use tight screens. Cal never caught their breath and slowed down. The more behind they were, the harder they tried. Duke lead the score by a factor of two most of the game..

Even in their four losses, they managed to force at least 15 turnovers in each of those games as well. I also noticed that Duke also get lots of offensive rebounds as well.
On the other hand, I noted that their defense also involves a lot of fouling as their opponents tend to get numerous chances at the FT line
Just from quickly scanning the box scores of their four defeats, it seemed to be from:

- North Carolina: Duke shot a miserly 23.5% from the field but the game still went into OT, thanks to 26 turnovers from the Tar Heels
- South Florida: Their most surprising loss and in this game, the TO count was pretty even on both sides (15-14), so it came down to a better shooting percentage and more trips to the FT line for S. Florida
- South Carolina: Gamecocks had 16 turnovers but Duke actually had more (18) thanks to S. Carolina's own stifling defense. It seemed like Staley's squad was on fire though and the normally stout defense from the Blue Devils broke down, as S. Carolina shot 57% from the field. No wonder they are the defending national champs and a favorite to win it all again
- Maryland: 20 turnovers from the Lady Terrapins, but 45% from the field and 24 trips to the FT line was able to overcome that in a tight 5-point loss
