I agree that the women's teams have been pretty successful this year, but I think it's naive to not recognize some headwinds and potential impact of NIL. You present the breakdown by sport in a very positive light, but here's how I see each time relative to their historic standards, which I imagine will require me to duck from the various tomatoes and objects that will be thrown at me for this breakdown.
Women's golf - No argument there. A dominant machine that is recruiting as such.
Women's rowing - Same as golf.
Women's water polo - Good season this year, but we are losing two Olympians, including the top player in the country in Ryann Neushul, and the incoming recruiting is not as strong as before. There are no more Fischers, Steffens or Neushul sisters out there. Competition is pretty small though, essentially boils down to USC/UCLA and us every year.
Women's tennis - Down year, should be better with incoming class, but remains to be seen if they are making final fours or winning titles again.
Women's soccer - #7 ranked recruiting class is a relative down year for us in recruiting. Have lost a number of top recruits due to going pro straight out of HS, which is a big headwind IMO. National team doesn't seem to look kindly upon players going to college vs straight to pro. We were fortunate to make College Cup this year considering we didn't even qualify for ACC tourney (which probably helped us rest wise in the end). I'm curious who's saying we're a leading national title contender next season as I think it'll be hard for us just to make it back to the College Cup.
Women's swimming - Surprised everyone by finished 2nd. We're losing out on a lot of the top HS recruits to UVA and others. Will be tough to get back to winning NCAAs the next few years with the UVA machine.
Women's Cross Country - we've been middling for a while here. Recruiting reasonably well, but always beset by injuries and have trouble breaking through.
Women's indoor track - Don't know enough about the sport to opine on how we're doing.
Women's outdoor track - TBD
Women's volleyball - Haven't made a Final Four since Plummer graduated. Have been getting pretty good recruiting classes, but haven't been able to get that terminal OOS hitter that we need to win a title (see Tom, Walsh, Nnamani, Plummer). Would love to be wrong but headwinds trying to get back to Final Four.
Beach volleyball - A program on the rise. I think this will be the next stanford team to win a national title for the first time.
Gymnastics - Great recruiting class coming in. 2026 and 2027 could be big years for them.
Basketball - hard to say if they've righted the ship just basis on one recruiting cycle. Will have to see how it all comes together. At least a couple years away from getting back to an Elite Eight/Final Four (I hope I eat my words...)
Softball - Hope for pitching to come through or else we're wasting some great hitting. Will believe it when I see it.
Lacrosse - Definitely on the rise, but remains to be seen if we can break in the top ranks of the ACC. This year was much better than our historical norm.
Don't know enough about the other sports to say much other than fencing is an NCAA sport and the other sports are not going to be impacted by NIL. They very well could get cut though.
