The Women's Tennis Season has kicked off with ITA All-American Championships this week. I was hoping that Colorado Tree would provide us with an in depth look at the tournament - and perhaps they'll show up to dazzle us with their knowledge. 

Stanford has a quartet that are kicking off in the Qualifying for the Main Draw - led by #58 Caroline Driscoll, #83 Monika Ekstrand, #90 Alyssa Ahn, #98 Tianmei Wang. Valerie Glozman is presumably in the main draw. The first round of qualifying is under way, and the results are:

I think the next round sees....us face mostly unranked foes - so hopefully we keep marching. On paper, these all look like winnable matches, but early season has a way of being dangerous - and Maralgoo Cogsomjav just trounced #56 Gianna Oboniye 6-4 6-1 - so Ahn has a tough match ahead.

That said, the story of the tournament for Stanford is Valerie Glozman. She was down a set against Cal's Mao Mushika - but battled back to win 3-6 7-5 6-3. The quarterfinals was a dominant show for Glozman as USC's Charney was swept aside 6-0 6-2. It's worth noting that per Stanford Twitter, Glozman is the first Stanford semifinalist at ITA All Americans since.........Hilary Barte who went the distance (!!!) in 2010. 

That's an incredible stat given some of the quality players we've had come through Stanford in that span - but I can imagine that it was a big ask for those who won a team championship to then go on a tear in the individual tournament as this used to be held right after the team championships.Next up, Valerie has the chance to exact some revenge on Ohio State by knocking out #11 Teah Chavez.

Glozman won the semifinals yesterday against Teah Chavez from Ohio St 6-3, 6-2.  She plays in the finals today against another sophomore, Carmen Herea, from Texas.  Herea took out Alyssa Ahn in the second round.  Herea got a little bit lucky in that #2 seed Brantmeier from UNC pulled out due to injury in the quarterfinals.  However, Herea did beat the #3 seed Luciana Perry from Ohio St in the semis in 3 sets.  Ohio St had a very good showing with two in the semis.

It's a mixed bag here. 

Let's start with Ekstrand who was seeded fourth. It's hard coming into a regional like this on Cal's home courts - but really, given that Naomi Xu played #6 for Cal last season, this should've been a winnable match. It appears that Xu for Cal is much improved this season, given that she just knocked off Washington's #1 Matsuda in the quarters in dominating fashion. As to Emma Sun - it's good to see her come through qualifying and be seemingly healthy - that said - she lost to Sophie Hernandez who memorably clinched for Cal in the Big Slam last year against Shaffer despite not playing in most of Cal's duals last year. 

It's hard to read into Myoung and Wang's results here. Myoung won what she was supposed to, and then lost her match to Washington's Matsuda who was the #6 seed. The same could be said for Wang - but I'd really liked to have seen Wang beat Jacobs. That said, Jacobs is currently battling it out in a third set with the top seed, Mushika (Cal). Those two results though, give me hope that we have a solid top 6 that can compete against most teams.

Correct. This was likely our best opportunity to have a third qualifier - but the next chance comes with ITA Sectional Tournament up in Seattle starting November 6th. There will be a last and outside chance through Conference Masters - but it's unclear to me how a Stanford player would be nominated for such a tournament.
