Stanford men's volleyball team just had their best weekend of the year defeating #7 Brigham Young twice, yesterday (3-1) and just now (3-2)
Prior to BYU, Stanford beat Concordia twice and St. Francis twice, all four matches were 3-0 match wins. Guess we're not screwing around any more.
Difference? Perhaps the emergence of true freshman setter Jacob Little-Phillips, undersized at 6'2". He's an excellent setter, played on the USA Volleyball men's U21 team, one of the AVCA Top 25 underclassmen, 17 Open All American in 2024, two time state player of the year, four year letter winner, etc. He had been in and out of the lineup, played the first three matches of the season, sat against UC Irvine adn Jessup, played against Merced, sat first Hawaii match, played the second and has been the main setter ever since. For the uninitiated, setter is your most crucial position, the quarterback of the team. He's a very clean setter, only four setting errors and 313 assists all year.
And Alex Rottman is back. Rottman, from a prominent volleyball family redshirted last year. He was named MPSF Defensive Player of the Week for 10 digs and seven blocks against #6 UC-Irvine back in the first week of February.
Stanford lost that second Hawaii match 3-0 (just like the first one), but theyve won six straight ever since, including 3-1 yesterday and 3-2 just now against #7 BYU. Serving was clean, setting was clean, hitting .338 and solid, good defense. Evan Porter, on the All-MPSF frosh team last year as a libero had thirty digs in two matches against BYU, excellent work.
Stanford is now 9-8 on the season. They play the alumni next Saturday, and then the following weekend play #1 UCLA at UCLA. Stanford actually leads the MPSF with a 6-0 record in MPSF play, UCLA is right behind at 5-0 (they're 17-0 overall and have lost nine sets total in the seventeen matches). Should be fun.
