Also: all of those statements could apply to some but not all of the coaches. In particular, Nunu and Courtney were both coached by Tara and Amy. Heck, it could even refer to past coaches. I don't think those are the redemptive messages you think they are. They are boilerplate.

I sucked it up and subscribed to that other site - I am now very convinced there was mental and verbal abuse and also that it's likely a matter of when, not if, Kate is gone. Hopefully it's before everyone in the portal has left for good, although I'm uncertain if it's salvageable regardless.

I’ll be blunt here. I’ve been around for 30 years on these sites but I don’t post that often. However some recent posts really rub me the wrong way. 

2006alum, we get that you’re a rabid fan. But what gives you the right to question a new poster’s motivations just because he/she just opened a Cardboard account? Shouldn’t this community embrace newcomers rather than be suspicious of them? Isn’t that the spirit that will drive the expansion of Cardinal fandom - which we all agree is a good thing? Or are we just a snotty little circle of handwringers who want to wallow in the exclusivity of our despair?

Perhaps my experience is informed by Lauren Betts's mom repeatedly posting a few years back consistently critical commentary about the coaches, the usage patterns for Betts, etc. If she had just said from the outset - hey, I'm Lauren Betts's mom, and I'm troubled by what I'm seeing! Fine. Great. We now know what the basis for their commentary is. But it got a little suss when they clearly had a motivated interest they refused to disclose.

Based on that experience, I am a little wary of new posters who only post about a specific topic, with what seems like an interest-motivated perspective. "Farmerguy" is similarly new to the board, introduced themselves and their interest in this topic, and it didn't bother me in the slightest.

But in any event, I'll stand down going forward, because I've pretty much said all I have to say, and this thread can carry on lamenting about NIL and the portal.

Same. It felt like a lot of law-firm-advised boilerplate but the one thing it said very clearly is that whatever they do, the decision will be made next week.

I'm currently trying to guess which law firm is busily spending this weekend finishing up their internal investigation report...

Does anyone find it odd that (to my knowledge), the SF Chronicle has not published one story about the exodus of Stanford players, let alone other brewing issues?  In today's paper there is a story about your star (men's) basketball freshman leaving the program, but nothing on the multiple transfers for WBB.  What do you think might be going on with the lack of news?

imo it's not just or even primarily that alwaysright is new; more that alwaysright is largely challenging and rebutting - even snarky at times, eg. "facts" and "so stanford does not include coaches" - rather than adding any constructive perspective on how to stop the bleeding. so the context of the question would seem to be, why does a new poster appear out of nowhere with such a tone of aggression to fellow posters?

Kate Paye's 2025 statements after her promotion about Stanford avoiding the portal, either through attrition to the portal or acquisition from the portal, presumed that, in light of its academics and prestige, Stanford could recruit excellent recruits who would improve over time and win championships.

Kate's assumption may have been true 10 years ago when recruits more highly valued a Stanford education, understood the 40 year decision, did not have access to lucrative basketball financial deals either during or after college, and faced penalties for transfers within their PAC 12 conference. Tara's reputation was golden after her three NCAA thrchampionships. The celebrations surrounding her record setting 1202+ win total in January 2024 suggested her former as well as her current players, at least, highly valued her.

Kate's assumption that Stanford's players would not use the portal, now, has collapsed. Stanford's institutional advantages have turned into structural disadvantages. We no longer play against traditional rivals within one time zone to large crowds. We no longer can control recruits' finances or transfers. Our rigorous academics may repel many potential recruits since their focus now is more on current financial rewards and less on 40 year choices. Why choose Stanford when other excellent colleges offer easier academics, higher payments, less travel, excited fans, media exposure and. most important, good, friendly coaches.

Of course Stanford's success now depends upon its offering an absolutely stellar Head Coach and Assistant Coaches with impeccable reputations. Stanford does not have to know to a certainty whether Kate is a good, bad, or absolutely terrible coach to decide her fate. The unparalleled mass portal exodus of seven current players, leaving only five returnees, plus three recruits, will be the contemporary commentary on Stanford women's basketball that kills both our present and future.

We no longer have Stanford's and Tara's reputation; we have Kate's. We need someone else’s.

Kate's assumption may have been true 10 years ago when recruits more highly valued a Stanford education, understood the 40 year decision, did not have access to lucrative basketball financial deals either during or after college, and faced penalties for transfers within their PAC 12 conference. Tara's reputation was golden after her three NCAA thrchampionships. The celebrations surrounding her record setting 1202+ win total in January 2024 suggested her former as well as her current players, at least, highly valued her.

Kate's assumption that Stanford's players would not use the portal, now, has collapsed. Stanford's institutional advantages have turned into structural disadvantages. We no longer play against traditional rivals within one time zone to large crowds. We no longer can control recruits' finances or transfers. Our rigorous academics may repel many potential recruits since their focus now is more on current financial rewards and less on 40 year choices. Why choose Stanford when other excellent colleges offer easier academics, higher payments, less travel, excited fans, media exposure and. most important, good, friendly coaches.

Of course Stanford's success now depends upon its offering an absolutely stellar Head Coach and Assistant Coaches with impeccable reputations. Stanford does not have to know to a certainty whether Kate is a good, bad, or absolutely terrible coach to decide her fate. The unparalleled mass portal exodus of seven current players, leaving only five returnees, plus three recruits, will be the contemporary commentary on Stanford women's basketball that kills both our present and future.

We no longer have Stanford's and Tara's reputation; we have Kate's. We need someone else’s.

In case anyone missed it, this is not just fans parsing exit announcements.  On the pay board, Rivals, there has been reporting on the situation.  It is not made up.  It does not rely on what is on Instagram.  AlwaysRight does seem to have an agenda, which is ok.  People can certainly have an agenda and post what they like.  AlwaysRight is not in this case right, however.  This is not just smoke.  There is fire.  Players are indeed leaving in large part due to what they perceive as a toxic, not positive, however you want to say it, environment created by Kate and some on staff (not sure how many or who).  

I'm sure not winning as much as expected plays some role, as does the money, although reporting on TOS suggests Stanford had enough money to keep players.  We all saw evidence of bad coaching, which now we know was also an unhappy team environment.  It showed in their play in the last half of the season.  What we now know explains a lot of what we were seeing.  It all makes sense.

Stanford will announce Kate Paye is stepping down. It will be announced in such a way that it appears she did so voluntarily. There will be no reference to any allegations or investigation. This will be done to keep the negative publicity out of the news. 

Stanford will quickly hire Lindy La Roque as the next HC. She will be tasked with saving the program she played for. Tara will be heavily involved in her hiring. Stanford will limit themselves by only looking at female candidates. She will bring most of her staff and some of her players. 1 or 2 current assistants (those were least complicit) could stay on as assistants. The rest of the staff will be gone. 

Anyone else care to venture a prediction?

If they had a negative attitude or were rude/indifferent to the coaches, that’s going to be reported to a potentially interested team. I find it interesting that only one of the seven have found a team and I wonder how much of it is the Stanford coaches’ report on them and their attitude.

Can't argue with that prediction! That said, the chance of it coming true isn't very great. One scenario here is that Donahoe has actually been working behind the scenes for quite some time, but it's taking so long because he can't convince anyone to take the job (much like what I believe happened with the football program). This roster has been cratered and as many have posted, it will be tough to bolster through the portal given Stanford's restrictions. The NYT summed up coaching at Stanford (football) with: "“Academic rigor. Difficulty of transfers. Has money,” “But would need a developmental approach and unique style that might take a cycle of older players hitting at the right time.”  It's quite possible that the best coaching candidates (La Roque, Rueck, etc.) might just view the Stanford women's basketball head coach job as career suicide...
