Watching Stanford's offensive approach so far reminds me of the Big 12 teams of the 70's and 80's. We are committed to the run, and we want to try to hit an occasional deep pass when the defense over-plays the run. The component that we are lacking is the big play threat that those offenses had in the wishbone, forcing defenses to defend the entire field. Andrew Luck's passing provided that threat last year with the short passing game to supplement the power rushing game. Right now, we feel like those wishbone teams, with only the dive-back option--no QB or tailback pitch threat--just a very easy offense to game-plan for. Do any better historical comparisons come to mind?
