Like for most recruits Stanford offers, his recruitment, IMO will come down to whether Peppers is admitted or not. Guys like him aren't going to commit to Stanford and then de-commit later. He doesn't want anyone to be able to say he was denied admission. He's too proud and competitive.
Moreover, it's not like if a recruit were to choose Michigan, Alabama, Ohio State or LSU after being denied by Stanford, that anyone would bother to even consider he might have been denied Stanford admission. I've read the comments fans have made about him on other sites. Even after three BCS games in a row, nobody thinks a star player like Peppers would ever choose Stanford over one of those programs.

I think the idea that Peppers and other 5 star recruits verbal to the best available opportunity makes a lot of sense. He can tell the obsessed local media that he is going to "Big State U". Great. Then everyone will let that be. And it probably is helpful for his on the field development to reduce or eliminate that commitment noise and hype.
Then he might, or might not, tell that same "Big State U" that he will definitely go to Big State U if Stanford says no. That staff would likely accept that information without disclosing it to the media. They probably would keep it close just so that other schools don't chase him as an uncommitted. As a 5-star recruit that quasi-verbal would be better than the silly hat on a table 8 months from now. That same staff could then focus their messaging on the their Big State U vs. Stanford storyline for the next several months.
Then if he ultimately gets accepted to Stanford he can switch his verbal, which happens all of the time anyway, or he can stay aligned with "Big State U".
If a recruit does not verbal at all, then the media and 30+ schools will probably hound him relentlessly for months. I must say if I was in that situation I would verbal to my best available option at this point too.

yeah after his tweet yesterday which has since been deleted, he had tons of lunatic grown men tweeting him to go to Notre Dame, Clemson, Bama, Michigan, Ohio State, etc. That has got to be pretty obnoxious.

I don't like the idea of any of our recruits committing to another school, even if it's just a public decoy that is supposed to only be used in case he gets the thin letter. Psychological forces are strong. Shaking a coach's hand and saying "yes" can carry a lot of weight. You start wearing the gear, watching the games with vested emotions, imagining yourself playing there next year, building a lot of expectations with your friends and families. Maybe late one night, instead of bearing down and studying for an important test, you take your foot off the pedal by justifying that even if you don't get into Stanford, you've got a great fall back. Suddenly, months later, you get the thumbs up and it's hard to reverse course.
I can see the practical benefits for the recruit of reducing the "noise", but I think it would hurt Stanford's chances.

Here's an idea sure to be controversial: super Early Action admission for athletes. And make it super Early Decision. If you get in, you accept.

I think it's best to take any comments made by any of these recruits immediately after a visit with large doses of salt. Unless the student just hated the place, the general rules of polite behavior would probably lead them to say nice things about the visit; add to that slanted reporting from local members of the media who might be open boosters of the school ("So, Jabrill, what did you think of those new facilities? Aren't they great?" "Um, yeah, they were nice" becomes "Peppers was particularly impressed by the new facilities"); the desire for the recruit to keep strong relations with the program rather than burn bridges; the emotional high of being courted and fawned over during the visit, which has got to fade with a little time and distance. The stories are interesting, but I'm not sure how much we can really learn from them. I know a couple of years ago, I was absolutely certain Josh Garnett was heading to Michigan, and a lot of his public comments hinted as much, but he still ended up with us. I won't flip out about Peppers comments regarding Michigan.Â

Drukarev thinks we're doing business in Texas; "Stanford's doing well w/ Nick Watkins [four-star CB] and Solomon Thomas [four-star DL]. In the mix for a few others."

Brandon Simmons sounds like the ideal first commitment:
"Ive been telling everybody Im planning on winning recruiter of the year."

EDIT: Simmons is apparently targeting Jabrill Peppers and Solomon Thomas. Revealingly (maybe?), Solomon Thomas has favorited the Drukarev tweet announcing that plan of action.
