This Rosen vs. Town issue isn't new. You only have to look back at last year to see something similar. By all accounts, Max Browne, the top-ranked quarterback in the country, was hoping to play for the Cardinal, but the coaching staff favored a lower-ranked kid, Ryan Burns. Browne never received an offer and ended up at U SC. (We'll see how that works out soon enough.)
Obviously, we aren't privy to most of the variables related to decisions like this. Coaches have to evaluate leadership skills, maturity, work ethic, intelligence, and coachability, amongst a host of other qualities, not the least of which is academic prowess. The recruiting rankings tell us about arm strength and accuracy and mobility, but they don't tell us which players best fit the Stanford system. If the coaches think Ricky Town is the better quarterback, then that's enough for me.

The weird thing about this controversy is that it's not even clear Rosen is the higher-rated guy overall. Town has better offers than Rosen. 247 thinks Town is the #1 QB; ESPN thinks Rosen is. So it's not as if Shaw et al. are making some out-of-left-field choice.
It's a big risk based on current public information to take, given Rosen's enthusiasm for Stanford (and Town's like of SEC schools).
What makes evaluation difficult here is the Plan B. A lot of people are suggesting that the options are Rosen vs. Town-or-nothing. But of course this may happen (if the coaches have decided they don't want to take a QB if Town falls through and Rosen is uninterested). But it might not! They can offer another quarterback. Most accounts have the 2015 CA QB class as very strong collectively, and a few of them have already worked out for Stanford. It could be that the coaching staff simply does not see the downside scenario as having all that much downside.

I agree with you. I suspect staff has thought through the scenarios before offering, and it keeps with a risk averse (or lowered risk) approach. of course, a lower risk may be offers to both.

Like many posters, I am shocked that we wouldn't offer Rosen. A top-notch QB that wants to come here. The Coaches are obviously closer to the situation than I am and I trust they know what they are doing.

The reason to take a QB every class is because it's the one position where it's difficult to get a guy enough reps to showcase his talents to pro scouts if he isn't a starter. Thus, it's a position that experiences a lot of transfers. See: Nottingham, Brett.
Of course, if programs didn't bring in a QB every year there wouldn't be so many players to worry about getting reps and there would be fewer transfers. But it seems to make sense to have the most competition possible at the most important position on the field, and build as high a quality line of depth as possible, in the event a new QB is needed because the starter goes down.
As for Rosen, I haven't seen him play, just read reports. They suggest Rosen is not the most fleet of foot guy, and given he's had Luck, Nunes, and Hogan, how much Shaw raves about Mariota, and the fact Lloyd and Burns can run, as well as Chryst, I'd be willing to bet Rosen has no offer because he isn't as good on the run as Shaw now wants his QBs to be.

I would say 6 QBs is anti competitive, there aren't enough reps to compete at anything and its not like other positions where they can play special teams
Maybe Shaw knows that 1 of our guys is planning to transfer, or Hogan plans to leave early but otherwise I think it is a mistake to offer any 2015 QB.

I don't follow recruiting anywhere nearly as closely as some folks here do so I could be off base here but I don't see how the part in bold above is lower risk. Given Rosen's public statements about Stanford (and assuming we only want one QB in the class, which is highly likely) isn't giving offers to both pretty much equivalent to giving an offer only to Rosen? I.e., Rosen will likely commit soon after the offer.
Clearly, that's not what the staff wants. Otherwise they would have offered to Rosen only and moved on.

I don't follow recruiting anywhere nearly as closely as some folks here do so I could be off base here but I don't see how the part in bold above is lower risk. Given Rosen's public statements about Stanford (and assuming we only want one QB in the class, which is highly likely) isn't giving offers to both pretty much equivalent to giving an offer only to Rosen? I.e., Rosen will likely commit soon after the offer.

We aren't in desperate need of QB's for the '15 class. So, if the staff thought he was a potential superstar, it made sense to offer him even if he was a bit of a longshot.
If Rosen is the kind of guy who will dump us just because he wasn't our absolute #1 choice, well, I'm not sure we wanted him anyway.

Very interesting. Either the Stanford coaches read the situation poorly and took a really bad strategy, or they don't see value to adding Rosen to the roster in 2015. It seems they burned their bridge with him pretty badly, although if he really was as interested in Stanford as he originally said, then he should be open to future discussions once the sting of pride lessens.
I agree with those here that you should sign at least one QB per class. Think of the scenario where Burns and Chryst somehow are not available (transfer, medical issues, academic issues, etc.) in 2-3 years. Not signing a QB in 2015 could leave a big gap.
