I clearly was born out of time and want to comeback as 1960s Stymie.

The comment above about "undiscovered Van Morrison" made me think of a few years back and the Chi-Lites "Have You Seen Her" started playing in some store I was browsing, and I suddenly realized that there were tons of songs that I would never hear ever again.  Ever!
 
So whenever I discover something I have never heard by an artist I like, it's always wonderful.

Been wearing out Gregg Allman's Laid Back album, which I just discovered a few months ago.  I was a little after the Allman Bros and the deaths of Barry Oakley and Duane, but I have to say there have ended up my favorite band.

Derek Trucks drove me back to the Allman's.  At the end of his show here in Dallas a few months back, he threw his slide out into the audience, and I nabbed it.  When I showed it to my wife after the show (she is not into Tedeshi Trucks???) she asked "what's with the shot glass?

... but with the emergence of Disco, all had changed, changed utterly, and this time it was a terribly ugliness which had been born........

For me, disco wasn't ugly.  Not at all.

I attended an ethnically diverse junior high school in downtown San Jose in the mid-1970s; lots of Hispanic kids, but lots of African American and Asian American, some Pacific Islanders and a lot of Caucasian kids as well.  We had a definite urban vibe, such as it was.  We listened to Al Green, Chaka Khan, Tower of Power, Earth Wind & Fire, Average White Band, van McCoy (Do the Hustle), Minnie Ripperton, Carl Douglas, War, LaBelle, Stevie Wonder, Ohio Players, and Gloria Gaynor.  The only chiefly white musicians I can recall listening to at the time were KC & the Sunshine Band*, Frankie Valli (two Top 100 songs that year) and Elton John.  And "Jive Talkin" by the Bee Gees.

We didn't listen to Paul McCartney, Alice Cooper, America, Captain & Tenille, Glen Campbell, David Bowie, Neil Sedaka, John Denver, Doobie Brothers, Eagles, BJ Thomas, Sweet, Helen Reddy, Pilot, Carpenters, Tony Orlando, Barry Manilow, Harry Chapin, 10cc, Michael Murphy, Jessi Colter, Sammy Johns, or any of the other Top 40 songs that white singers performed.

As I look back at the time (very fondly, I might add) I discovered girls in a brobdingnagian way.  All the girls in my neighborhood and at my school liked to dance.  And I learned to dance...you couldn't listen to our music without being able to dance.  And dancing helped lubricate the social ramble, and the dance music of the mid-1970s was essentially the forerunner of mainstream disco.

Within two years, the entire country was listening to, and moving to disco.  My family moved from urban San Jose to almost-redneck Santa Cruz at the time.  The kids there (all white, few exceptions) didn't listen to Barry Manilow either, but by and large they didn't listen to disco; they listened to Van Halen and Journey and Foreigner and Aerosmith and AC/DC and Kansas and the like.  Great music, but didn't have a beat you could dance to, not really.  For me, high school dances were pretty miserable given that the local bands tended to play metal with the attendant lengthy drum solos.  And everybody seemed to love "Freebird" or Journey's "Lights" as an excuse to grope each other during one of the few slow rock songs.  I spent my time at discos in San Jose or Watsonville, occasionally seeing one of my male classmates looking absolutely miserable, given their absolute inability to dance or fit in with the disco vibe.  My theory as to why so many people either have amnesia with respect to disco, or just dislike it, is because they couldn't feel the rhythm or dance to it.  For them, it was a relief when the era passed and the could return to head banging.

For me, it was a great, great time.  I loved disco, and I admit it.  And lots of stereotypically white rockers came out with disco music; Blondie, David Bowie, Rolling Stones, KISS, ELO, etc.  I never had a shortage of dates, didn't spend much time at the typical suburban Caucasian high school parties (joints, keggers, fistfights), but had wonderful, highly aerobic nights.  Yes, I knew the steps and wore Angel's Flight outfits.  Don't regret it in the slightest.  Wouldn't and couldn't go back, but every now and then, I hear the music, turn it waaaaay up and go back in time for a few minutes.

Years later (but pre-hip hop), I was watching a retrospective on disco.  It was pretty revealing.  One after the other Caucasian rockers admitted to listening to and enjoying disco music when no one else was around (I specifically remember Alice Cooper and Rod Stewart - who went on to make a disco song, Do Ya Think I'm Sexy -- admitting as much)  And one of the old disco singers (I forget his name, minor African-American disco star, might've been Jimmy Ellis of the Trammps) was asked the question "What made disco special?"  And he replied, "It was the last time that black folks listened to music made by white people."  Anyway, it stuck with me.

Disco also was much better dancing music than listening music.  Disco really syncopates with the moves of that time, and that pace is too fast for ballad but too slow for anthem.

Live concerts that have knocked my socks off include:
Harry Connick Jr. I have seen him 4 times, each time was great. His tour for She and Star Turtle rank up there as some of the best music I have heard.

Blues Traveler, I have seen them 3 times, and it is always a gas.

Billy Idol with Faith No More my freshman year was amazing.

Metallica, seen them 6 times, but worked 5 of those. Always a great show.

Styx, I have seen them on the senior circuit a few time lately, Tommy Shaw still rips it up. Similarly Judas Priest has been a better show lately than they were in my youth.

The bad:
Boston, they opened for Styx and you could tell they were a studio band more than a live act.

Buddy Guy, the show was amazing in many respects, but he had really gotten old and was having trouble playing by the end. This one ranks as bad simply because, seeing one of your blues heroes age, is never fun.

Def Leppard, I worked for them at a show in '99, it was a train wreck from start to finish.

Sugar Ray, again I worked this one, and they simply seemed more interested in which of the girls they were going to take backstage than putting on a show. They only played for about 40 minutes.

You know he lived at Stanford in the 60s, right? He was sleeping at the Beta Chi house and rockin' it there between gigs. Don't really know the circumstances that led to that, but there he was.

And so another mix tape was made with EWF, Parliament, Prince, Jacksons, Run DMC, etc.  We might throw in The Police once but everyone left the floor.  I've got to admit the dancing was much more fun and the aerobic value greater than the average frat party I attended!  (And not surprisingly, the drink to dance ratio was lower.)

My rock and roll friends might have rolled their eyes but our parties were pretty darn fun.

I know where Mick and Hulk are coming from.

For three years at Stanford my roommates (Suites, Off-Campus, Trailers) were  funk/70s Disco/80s R&B Asian guys.  I was a white kid into Rock.  We would throw house parties, go to dances at Ujamaa and generally enjoyed hanging with each other.  So yeah, some nights I was that white kid with the small group of Asians chanting "West Coast/East Coast" while dancing at an Ujamaa party.  Confused, much?

Anyway, I can remember making a dance party mix tape with my roommates (hah! If you're under 30 you have NO idea) and trying to get them to include some of my songs.  "Carry on My Wayward Son?";  "Every Little thing She Does is Magic"?; "One"? 

"But Lefty.  That's interesting stuff but we just CAN'T DANCE to that.  "
