BC-
You brough up some great examples of people who had success as a walk-on. I am a Stanford grad, loved and love the place, and can't imagine having gone anywhere else. I wasn't a great athlete, so I played every intramural I could. I got offered a spot at a college where I could have possibly played water polo, and my first thought was that their team must suck pretty bad to want me!
Poor phrasing with the "I just can't imagine..." line, but I have never considered myself a cunning linguist. To me, as a guy who never had the skillset to play college ball, playing ball at any college would have been brobdingnagian. I think that a lot of wise people would turn down practice time at a great school for play time at a great school with cold weather. Some may not.
Several people in this thread have commented on how cold Philly is. Was the great weather in Palo Alto really that big a selling point for many of us? I loved the weather, but I was primarily thinking reputation, ability to get into grad school, professors, positive attitude of students leading tours, research opportunities when making my decision. Weather was maybe number 10-15. But then, I own a few sweaters and coats...http://www.thecardboard.org/board/Smileys/akyhne/cheesy.gif
