Nicole Powell, one of our greatest basketball players, apparently is retiring from the WNBA after 11 seasons there.Â

When she was with us she was an All-American three times and had a knack for triple-doubles. She is now 7th on our all-time scoring list, but 3rd on the ppg list, ahead of Nneka. She is 6th on 3 pointers, 4th in rebounds, and 2nd in rebounds per game behind only Chiney. Remarkably, she is 5th on our assists board and near the top in free throws. Nicole was a remarkably talented player and those triple doubles were no fluke--of all of Stanford's elite players she was the most versatile.
Nicole was taken third in the 2004 draft behind Diana Taurasi and Alana Beard. Her peak years were with Sacramento in 2007-2009. In 2009 she averaged 17 points and 30 minutes a game. In her pro career Nicole has had declining production for a few years. This year she played sparingly and not at all in the last few games.
This year she coached part time for Gonzaga, and she recently accepted a position as assistant coach for Oregon, so we will see her regularly. Before we hired Tempe she was one of the names we floated here on the Cardboard as a potential assistant coach here, and who know, perhaps that will come to pass one day.
Congratulations to our three time All American on the close of her outstanding career as a player!
