McCaffrey - lex24 - 12-25-2019

109 catches going into week 17. A record for an NFL running back. He broke the prior record of 107. Held by ... McCaffrey. With about 70 yards receiving he will join Roger Craig and Marshall Faulk as the only RBs to have over 1000 running and receiving. He will run for about 1400 this year.

I don’t know this for a fact, but I suspect he will again be the skill position non-QB player that is on the field for the highest percentage of snaps in the league. He was last year.

Not bad for a guy many (including amazingly enough some Stanford fans) thought was more suited to be a slot receiver.  And many more believed he couldn’t handle being an every down back.  Wrong.

An incredibly dynamic football player. Which was obvious from his first play with Stanford. Not his first touch - which of course was a TD.  His first play. When he obliterated the wedge playing on the kick coverage team.

Would have been an All American safety if he so chose. Probably a single wing TB back in the day.

RE: McCaffrey - another potential record - threepointer - 12-25-2019

"He’s also 215 yards away from matching Chris Johnson’s NFL record of 2,509 yards from scrimmage in a single season. McCaffrey has only reached the 215-yard threshold once this season, a 237-yard effort against Jacksonville in Week 5."

I don't pretend to be an expert talent scout for NFL players, but nothing of what you posed is confirmation that he wouldn't be better off as a slot receiver. Who could say if his stats wouldn't be even more off the charts playing that position? McCaffrey's been incredible and is carry an amazing load, but I do wonder about his career longevity with his current load, though. Hopefully Carolina kind figure out a QB situation that will relieve the load somewhat.

I think he'll be done by age 28.  What he's doing isn't human.

Frank Gore is Superman.

No doubt Gore is amazing. Did he ever have a season with as many touches at McCaffrey or was on the field for as many snaps?

I hope McCaffrey is able to cash in on the lucrative 2nd contract (although $14M in earnings to date is nothing to turn your nose up at). For comparison as top earning slot receivers, Julian Edelman has earned $36M over 11 seasons and Doug Baldwin made $40M over 8 (starting as an undrafted free agent).

RE: McCaffrey - Phogge - 12-26-2019

Frank has managed to come back from an ACL in 2002 spring practice at the U. Suffered another Grade 3 vs W. Va. in 2003. Fractured his hip during his Niner run but recovered in the offseason w/o surgery. A very tough guy. So is McCaffrey.

Missed you guys over a long sabbatical.  Now tanned, rested and brain still consistency of cold Cream of Wheat.

The point was that many thought he couldn’t play running back in the NFL. Which I think motivated him big time. I always thought that’s one of the reasons he didn’t play in the bowl game - he wanted to get himself in top condition and be ready for the combine. I think he felt he needed to prove his athleticism. Stereotypes are hard to shake.

He is fricking amazing. Hate to think how his body will feel in 10 years. Course, he may still be playing. Wasn’t the big question on him coming out of Miami durability?  I guess he answered that one.

#3 on NFL career rushing yards, just passing up Barry Sanders this year.  1,405 yards behind Walter Payton and 3,032 yards behind Emmitt Smith.

I also think he will have a short playing career, which means this is exactly the sort of statistical achievement C-Mac needs if he has any shot at the Pro Football HOF.

He also finished third in rushing with 1,387 yards. The top rusher, Derrick Henry, had 1,540 yards.

Interestingly, he was "only" fourth in the league in rushing attempts, with 287. Still, he's on the field way too much and is taking too many hits.

At least he won't have to worry about taking hits in the playoffs? (In all seriousness, can somebody who follows the NFL more closely than I do tell me what went wrong with the Panthers this season?)

Isn't it as simple as bad quarterback play? I didn't follow the team closely at all, but Cam Newton is a shell of himself due to injury and then the back up had some shining moments but ultimately isn't a great QB either.

In the NFL, the team will live and die based on QB play.

RE: McCaffrey - needle - 12-30-2019

Even if Cam Newton had been healthy, the team would have really struggled to make the playoffs. The Panthers ranked 31st out of 32 teams in points allowed, giving up 29.4 points per game.

RE: McCaffrey - BostonCard - 12-31-2019

One last superlative for McCaffrey... he was the top fantasy points scorer this year.

Yes, he was. Didn't do me much good as Rodgers, MMack, KAllen, and the Bears' defense had inconsistent years.
