WBB: P12 Tourney: Stanford vs. Cal Thursday 2:30 - 81alum - 03-02-2024

Preview:

It is my understanding that the seeding for our bracket has been nailed down and this is the match up and time we will play.  WSU and Cal will play on Wednesday at 2:30 and the winner will move on to play us on Thursday at 2:30.

Our last Cal thread is here:
https://thecardboard.org/board/showthread.php?tid=24794&pid=408708&highlight=WBB%3A+Stanford+84#pid408708

Our last WSU thread is here:
https://thecardboard.org/board/showthread.php?tid=24778&pid=408315&highlight=WBB%3A+Stanford+73#pid408315

Whichever team we get, this will be the third time we will play them this year.  Beating a team 3/3 is always a special challenge, since the other team has had so much time to scout and prepare and try out various tactics.  They now know what NOT to do.

I'll return and do a bit more of a scout once we know who we definitely will be playing.  WSU is playing better at this point than Cal, although Cal keeps improving as their win at Oregon showed.  My money would be on WSU.

If we win out and the seeds all hold, then we would play:
1) WSU 2:30 Thursday
2) Oregon State 5:00 Friday.  Most likely alternative: Colorado
3) USC 2:00 Sunday: Most likely alternative: UCLA

I’ve always been suspicious of the “tough to beat the same team three times” adage.  Mostly because I rarely see the underdog channel all that supposed knowledge and win.

Regardless of what the may have learned, if we come ready to play we smoke those guys!

I'm more nervous about WSU than Cal because, tho both of those teams will want to win, WSU has extra motivation. This is their last ever chance to beat Stanford in the pac-12, avoiding the ignominious record of never having won

I think you are correct that when one team just doesn't match up physically or athletically the old adage doesn't apply.  I so sadly remember Oregon beating us three times in 19-20.  We just had no answer and the third game in the Pac 12 tournament was our worst.  I seem to remember Ionescu flying back from the Kobe Bryant funeral to join her team in thrashing us.

The three game adage I think is more applicable when the teams are more evenly matched and one team won the first couple of times through superior preparation, tactics, or coaching.  The question is whether WSU or Cal did or didn't get the most out of their players the last two times we played them.  WSU came within 15 last time and it was adjusting to play without CLW.  More recently Tuhina has been coming into her own.  Cal the first time was playing without a full strength Krimili, but she did not really get going in the second game.  I would therefore be slightly more worried about WSU at this point.

Here is a question:  if Lepolo, our best perimeter player can't play, who defends either Tuhina or Krimili?  Probably Harriel.  How will she do?  We don't yet know.  But a rematch probably won't be identical to the earlier games.

The bracket, game times, game announcers are all listed at the PAC-12 site.  I'm happy to see that the PAC-12 Bay Area schedule (at PAC-12.com and on Sling) has Stanford's game in the schedule at this time.  (Note that the championship game will be a token PAC-12 game on the ESPN channel with  ESPN announcers. Sigh..)

Whoever we play, I don't want to see Tiffany Bird or Kyle Bacon anywhere near our game(s).

I JUST DON'T WANT TO SEE ANOTHER PAC-12 REF. Especially after the game at OSU this week. Well, possibly next year unless the ACC hires them. Uch.

Oh, my. Good find.

I'm also trying to figure out what makes bacon a "Lenten Favorite."

Cal leads WSU 30-14 at the half. WSU scored 4 points in the 2nd quarter.

RE: WBB: P12 Tourney: Stanford vs. Cal/WSU Thursday 2:30 - 81alum - 03-06-2024

Yes, it is looking a lot like it will be an energized Cal team tomorrow night. afternoon.

Meanwhile, Colorado crushed Oregon 79-30.  Oregon scored 7, 4, 8, and 11 points by quarter.  The Colorado OSU game tomorrow night should be interesting.  I think I will cheer for OSU.

Cheering for OSU, too, since I hate Colorado's play. Sadly, whatever advantage there was to getting the bye was probably eliminated today since playing against Oregon was about as tiring as a shootaround. Advantage goes to Colorado for getting more practice in an unfamiliar gym.

Good points, but all the more reason to cheer for OSU as far as I'm concerned

For the Card, glad to be playing Cal rather than WSU

Did you take a quick trip to Europe?

Stanford's game on Thursday is scheduled for 2:30PM PST.

No longer really about the thread title, but re the tournament in progress, Ariz vs Washington. Much more competitive game than the two this afternoon -- Ariz 29, Wash 27 at the half,. Most mind-blowing stat to me, 5 fouls total called in 1st half -- 2 for Washington, 3 for Arizona

And that foul total is with Missy as one of the refs

RE: WBB: P12 Tourney: Stanford vs. Cal Thursday 2:30 - 81alum - 03-06-2024

So we WILL play Cal Thursday at 2:30 in the quarterfinals of the Pac 12 tournament.

A reminder of our last preview thread:

https://thecardboard.org/board/showthrea...#pid408708

Since we last played Cal, Cal is 3-2, having beaten ASU, Oregon, and WSU, and having lost to a surging Arizona and to Oregon State.

Today Cal looked energetic and their opponent WSU looked listless.  Cal had three double digit scorers in McIntosh, Krimili, and Onyiah.  They took 26 three point attempts and made 8.  Onyiah looked particularly good--and she was 4/4 against us last time.  Guarding Krimili and McIntosh will be a challenge, particularly if Lepolo can't go.

Anyone know where the band will send off the team tomorrow before the Cal game?

There will be a gala send off at Track 3 of the Colma-Daly City Caltrain station at 10 AM this morning.
