I like that only 1 home game is scheduled before the students arrive on campus. Not that it seems to matter that much to them.

A pretty even distribution of home games, which is nice. Beyond that, it is what it is. One bye between the two consecutive away games, which I guess makes sense; another bye after a home game against SJSU which is odd, but maybe a good week to re-calibrate after the first month of games?; bye right before Big Game is odder.

All games on Saturday! Three byes! No back to backs to the East.

Cal also has a bye the week before Big Game

This has big potential for a.) an improved overall record and b.) a disastroous 1-7 slide to close out the season.
As a TT "hater," it works for me! (There's no way he'd be brought back if the team goes 1-7 down the stretch...right?)
RE: 2025 football schedule -
SkiBum80 - 01-28-2025
I think the arrangement of the home and aways and the byes is a little bit improved schedule compared to last year, as far as travel considerations.
However, the expected overall quality of the opponents is quite daunting. Seems tougher overall than last year.
Not advocating at this point for retaining Coach TT or not, but simply looking at this schedule, to repeat a 3 win season would be a modest accomplishment for any coach given our roster. And winning 4 or more would be a real achievement.
This also without factoring in any known benefit yet from the hiring of AL as GM.

Now that the roster is mostly overhauled and the vast majority of Covid-year-super-super-seniors are gone across the country, repeating a 3-win season in year 3 should not be viewed as "a modest accomplishment." It should be viewed as failure to launch.

I can understand the desire to start winning and to replace TT if this is another downer year. Unfortunately, if you get what you ask for, the end result may be even worse. Ask yourself how many successful D1 coaches would want the Stanford job. Money maybe OK but hardly great, ability to attract to players near zero etc etc.
TT has shown he can coach, but is the Stanford job just a bridge too far considering the state of college football today? If I was a 4 or 5 star recruit coming out of highschool and with Stanford grades and scores, would I choose Stanford over tOSU or others? Do you want to play infront of an empty stadium while the coaching staff tries to bring in others near your level so as to start winning? How much can a 4 star recruit demand in NIL payments if he say goes to USC, tOSU, ND etc?
If schooll A offers you $1,000,000 in NIL payments and you can go to Stanford and get half of that why would you go to Stanford? The 40 year decison thing is dead in the water for almost all recruits. Playing in front of a crowd of 1000 is hardly inspiring. Most good high school players had bigger crowds than Stanford can offer now days.
While I would love to see this problem solved, I believe it is pretty much beyond the ken of current fans to solve.

IMO this is really the crux of the matter. There are a few such recruits that would come to Stanford because they like the academics and they (at least initially) believe they will enjoy being at Stanford. The vast majority look at the academic requirements as onerous and the Stanford social experience as not for them. Some recruits can be persuaded to come to Stanford despite these disincentives. Some will decide they like Stanford and stay. Many others will decide it isn't for them and go elsewhere, particularly if these recruits are still being "recruited" by other schools.
IMO the social fit is an issue for many athletes. It isn't just that "Stanford hates fun". That is only part of the issue. These athletes are used to their peers being "wowed" by the athlete's skills. They are used to being in an environment that has values similar to their own. Stanford isn't that. Athletes believe they are "entitled" because their experience is that they in fact are. There are all kinds of people at Stanford with all kinds of exceptional skills. It isn't all that exceptional. That doesn't work well for many athletes. They are used to at least being appreciated. They can get that elsewhere. Why remain where you aren't special when you can go someplace where you are?
Shaw told the story of the 5 star player he couldn't convince to attend Stanford because Stanford's team wasn't good enough to showcase the recruits talents. Shaw said he didn't want to be in that position again. Unfortunately, Stanford is in that position. If you think you are an NFL caliber talent, Stanford isn't the place to be. Arguably, it never can be. Even when Stanford is "good" an athlete still has to expend a significant amount of energy on academics. This is a distraction from NFL preparation and not at all "fun".

While the size of the crowd is a factor, I think it is a minor one compared to 1) academic requirements, 2) social fit, 3) lack of competitive parity. It is possible that by throwing enough NIL money at it competitive parity can be improved. Given the society in which Stanford must now operate, IMO the other problems are intractable.

Superb analysis. Camus's THE MYTH OF SISYPHUS comes to mind. Stanford is condemned to push that recruiting boulder up a steep hill over and over again.

I'm in the Taylor's gotta go camp, but if he goes 7-5 this fall, I would be ecstatic.
Why would night home games make us more likely to lose? The noon home starts are a big body clock disadvantage for us whereas the 7p starts (10p eastern kickoffs) are favorable for us.

Not going to disagree that we're probably not going to be recruiting at an elite level and getting the next Andrew Luck to take us to, say, the College Football Playoff; but I do think that recruiting is not the biggest problem with the football program today. For what it's worth, the past few Troy Taylor classes all rank around 50th in the country with a good sprinkle of three and four star players -- and that is despite NIL, despite the departure of Shaw, despite the administration's "war on fun," despite our academic requirements (or do 3* recruits who probably aren't making the League still making their "40 year decisions"?).
The fact is that we have consistently failed to develop talented blue chip recruits and the coaching staff is doing them no favors with game plans and various in-game hiccups. That should be the biggest indictment against Troy Taylor and co. And yes, I do believe that Taylor should be let go if we don't win three or more games next season and if we don't make a bowl game at all in the next couple of years.

I haven't heard that Duke, Northwestern, and Vanderbilt have thrown in the towel yet. It seems like they are counting on the House settlement to help level the playing field. Northwestern is doubling down by building an $850M stadium. If it works, it will generate a recruiting as well as a financial boost.

This is the "but all my friends are going to the party" justification. Stanford has to make its own decision, and I agree with the statement (though I get a sense from Gail's other writing that their proposed remedy is to change the nature of Stanford University). If it weren't for inertia, you would never start or upgrade a football program if you were Stanford today. We (along with Duke, Northwestern, and Vanderbilt) have way too many stakeholders and are too proud to throw in the towel, but we all probably should.
