Great trade in my opinion. Giants take on Devers, one of the best bats in major league baseball, All Star three of the last four years, down ballot MVP votes each of the last four years. Led league with 54 doubles in 2019. They also take on all $250 million of Devers' contract.

Devers leads the AL in walks with 55, his splits are .271/.400/.494/.894 this season and .279/.349/509/.858 overall. WAR of 3.6, 4.5, 3.5 and 3.7 the last four years. 3x 100 RBI years, scored 100+ two years.

Giants traded Kyle Harrison, James Tibbs, Jose Bello and Jordan Hicks. Tibbs was their first round draft pick (#13 overall) now batting .245 in high A. Jose Bello is 20 and starting his third season in rookie ball, hasn't gone to high or low A yet. Jordan Hicks has a 6.47 ERA this year with a 1.541 WHIP and a $44 million, 4 year contract. Failed starter. Harrison has a 4.73 career ERA, and a 4.56 ERA this year. He's only 23. He's the "star" of the deal. He's 39-35 overall, 1.297 career WHIP.

Potential Problems
This was partly a salary dump by the Red Sox, and partly getting rid of a disgruntled player. This is the issue with Devers...he led all AL third basemen in errors every year between 2019 and 2024. This dude cannot field the hot corner.  So he should really be the DH. Also, he's 6', 235 pounds, somewhat Panda-shaped.

Chapman eliminates any need to worry about him playing 3B.  I foresee him playing as the DH in the long run.  In the short term, 1B.

The least of my concerns is his attitude.  The Red Sox weren’t honest with him.  That is a non-issue in an organization that is led by a future Hall of Famer with three rings. Posey understands the importance of straight talk with the players.

The trade doesn’t change my opinion of Harrison.  I still think he will be a star.  However, the Giants are deep in young pitching and had to part with someone of value to get a player like Devers.   I wish Kyle the best.  As for Hicks, the promises he received from SF (under Zaidi) are now extinct.  I think his starting days are over.  If he embraces the reliever role, he has a chance to really help Boston.

Tibbs has been on the upswing over the last month.  Like any prospect, no one can say with unquestioned authority that he will become a regular in the bigs.  Time will tell.

Overall, I am excited to have an executive in charge who isn’t afraid of sticking his neck out in an effort to make the team better (especially at the cost of $250 million-plus).

Absolutely agree with all points.

1. Obviously, SF is not going to sit or move Chapman. Chapman is the Giants' best player as measured by WAR (2.9), followed distantly by Robbie Ray and Jung Hoo Lee (2.0). Really heppy that Lee is working out so well, BTW.

2. Didn't realize Boston wasn't honest with Devers, I didn't read that far into the story. Agreed with you re: Posey's candor, stature, etc. I think MLB players will want to come to SF in part for that reason. I think Posey was instrumental in Chapman's signing. And frankly...it may be the best, and only way to get real bombers to come to SF...trade prospects for a substantial star who is young and already under a long-term contract. And I think Devers will do great in SF with the short LF porch. His home run spread is interesting, five to LF, two to dead CF, three to the RF/CF alley and four dead pull in RF. He has 223 career HRs, 202 would have been HRs at Oracle, but he would have between 225 and 263 at all NL West parks.

3. I think both Harrison and Hicks are good pitchers, and hopefully Boston's pitching coaches draw that out of them. And it's too early to say whether Tibbs or Bello will succeed. Suffice it to say, for me, given the Giants' surplus of arms and minor league uncertainties, my opinion is that they got the better of the trade with a 28 year old bomber.

4. Agreed on Tibbs on the upswing. Crushing it over the last month or so. Eight HRs in 83 ABs, 18 RBIs, 19 runs scored, 17 walks and 23 K's, 1.030 OPS. He can play.

5. With his HR yesterday, Daniel Johnson's line is .235/.316/.471/.786. Not bad for a backup. I like him as a 4th outfielder, he's already played all three spots. No errors, great range.

6. Dominic Smith is working out. His line with the Giants is .343/.405/.514/.919, 5 walks, just 7 k's. And Smith is a very good fielder. His 2023 Rtot at 1B for the Nationals led the NL (12), he also led the NL in assists (143) and double plays (134). No errors so far in 10 games, and +1 Rtot.

7. No single player in Giants history has had grand slams in consecutive games. Schmitt is the first. The Giants have had only four games in which two players have hit consecutive grand slams (2015, Tomlinson & Marlon Byrd; 2003, Feliz and Aurilia; 1998 Kent and Snow; 1941 Ott and Harry Danning). Danning was a great catcher, 4x all star.  WWII took his last few years from him.

Giants are off today, I imagine Devers will join them vs. Cleveland tomorrow night. And there's 45 days left to the trading deadline. Maybe Posey isn't done yet.

Andrew Bailey is the Red Sox pitching coach.  Of those who might be able to unlock Harrison’s potential, I believe his name would be at the top of the list.

Per Andrew Baggerly, after factoring in the finances of the Devers deal, SF is about $18 million under the CBT limit.  I would not be surprised to see another move closer to the deadline.  However, I was dead wrong about the seeing a trade this early in the process, so who knows?  Maybe another trade is in the offing.

RE: SF Giants 2025 - Mick - 06-16-2025

Boston superfan Bill Simmons claims the Red Sox wanted to dump Devers' contract because Liverpool FC wanted to purchase Florian Wirtz ($136 million contract plus 16 mm. pound additional fees).

Liverpool and the Red Sox are both owned by the same corporate parent (Fenway Sports Group). Simmons is pushing the theory that the money was needed to sign Wirtz.

RE: SF Giants 2025 - Mick - 06-17-2025

Question for Giants...with $18 mms. in cap room, what do you think the Giants do between now and July 31?

Here's a suggestion: Trade Fitzgerald (.246/.306/.341/.647), Rayner Arias, Wisely, Marco Luciano, McCray and Walker Martin for Brendan Donovan (star young 2B) and 1B Wilson Contreras ($18 mms., 33 yrs old) or SP Miles Mikolas (4-4, 36 years old, $17.7 mms.). As the Cardinals continue to drop, they might be sellers.

Failing that, Jackson Holliday of Baltimore has the fourth highest OPS among second basemen. Ketel Marte of the DIamondbacks...has a big contract that he's unlikely to finish. He's also only played 45 games, but has a .959 OPS. Him for Fitz straight up would work, he's owed around $110 mms. by the D'Backs, just $7 mms. for the rest of this year.

RE: SF Giants 2025 - Giants - 06-17-2025

Assuming Fitzgerald continues to struggle at the plate, I think they will switch Schmitt to 2B (once Chapman returns) and use Fitzgerald as the primary utility IF.

They may be done adding to the lineup.  And, as we know, the bullpen is solid.  That leads us to….

Starting Pitching.    Posey might be looking for another starter (possibility a high end rental).  With Harrison gone, Verlander a continuing question mark and Birdsong/Roupp closing in on career marks for innings pitched, I think Posey needs to supplement the rotation with an seasoned arm, particularly someone with postseason experience.

Among the available big name rentals is Chris Sale.  He is signed through this year (with a club option for 2026 and no buyout) with a CBT salary of $19,000,000.  That would add about $6.5M to the Giants payroll this year.  Also, and probably more importantly when looking at potential trade targets, is that Atlanta is floundering.  They are in 8th place in the Wild Card standings, 7.5 games behind #3 San Diego.  And with Philadelphia and New York in their division, they have little chance of winning the NL East title.

What would ATL want for Sale?  I’ll let Posey figure that out ;)

A post season rotation of Webb, Ray, Sale and Verlander/Birdsong/Roupp would formidable.

Sale has been incredible for a long time. 18-3 last year, career 142-87, eight all star teams. He's 36 but pitching well...3-2 in his last five games, both 2-1 losses. How would he do at Oracle? Pretty darned well, my guess.

They would ask for Eldridge, and after Posey got done laughing, he'd say "Seriously, who do you want?"

It would take a lot. Because they’ll be a bunch of other teams in the mix. One of the positives in the Devers deal was timing.  Not only do they get 30 or so extra games this year – but they also got ahead of the sweepstakes. That would not be the case if Atlanta decides to do a Sale.

I just hope he doesn’t end up on the Dodgers or the Padres. ,

Yeah, it would be a heavy lift.  However, after watching Posey move early to secure Devers as well as sign Chapman before he went to market last year, I wouldn’t be surprised with any deals he completes.

Of course, now that he has stunned the baseball world, others will start saying, after you talk to that guy, “make sure you check your pockets to ensure your wallet is still there”.

Obtaining Sale wouldn’t be easy but it is certainly something fans can dream about…

UPDATE: Well, that didn’t take long. One day after suggesting Chris Sale would be a nice addition to the rotation, I’m taking the off-ramp on the Sale expressway to SF. Today, Alex Anthopoulos, the Braves President of Baseball Ops, stated that Sale will not be traded. Despite their current spot in the standings, they are going to be a buyer rather than seller at the deadline.

UPDATE2:

Sale fractured his rib cage on Wednesday making a defensive play. He was placed on the IL today and is out indefinitely.

Another Webb gem.  Since we he has the most 7+ inning starts in MLB.  39.  Four more than anyone else.

I think Boston thinks the same thing. It wasn't all that long ago that Harrison was the most promising lefty in the minors. And Boston's pitching coach was SF's pitching coach...I don't think he takes either Harrison or Hicks without having a really solid idea of what he's getting. With Hicks and Aroldis Chapman, Boston has both MLB relievers that can throw 103 mph.

And as far as Harrison goes, they sent him to Worcester for two reasons: first is to teach/develop two additional pitches, the cutter and the sinker in addition to the fastball, slurve and changeup. They want him to be in the strike zone twice as much as he currently is.

Second reason? If he's in the minors past July 4, they get an extra year of control on his contract. My guess is they call him up on 7/5 or 7/6.

In a perfect world, he would successfully develop a couple pitches that would complement his fast ball and become a solid #1 SP and Devers would become an MVP candidate.  I hope it happens….

RE: SF Giants 2025 - Nobadeer - 06-26-2025

Adames showing some signs of life, JH Lee looking a bit weary for June, and Devers reminding me a little of Juan Soto. Tons of natural hitting talent, he knows it, and has a quarter billion bucks to show for it. More than some MLB fan bases, SFG fans respect and demand effort as much as raw talent!

Hope Schmitt is okay or at least is on only a short IL visit.

RE: SF Giants 2025 - Mick - 06-26-2025

We're almost halfway through the season, at 80 games. Here's how our current record compares with other playoff seasons. Interesting how the two best half-way records led to early playoff exits whereas the next three resulted in World Championships:

2025 44-36

2014 47-33
2012 45-35
2010 41-39

2021 50-30

2016 49-31

RE: SF Giants 2025 - Mick - 06-26-2025

Separate topic, the Giants inability to score runs.

Let's talk about Donnie Ecker. He was the hitting coach for the Giants for the COVID season (2020) and their incredible 2021 season. When Bochy left, Ecker was one of the first guys they hired. He was hired as bench coach and offensive coordinator.

Here’s what’s interesting. Here’s the SFG and Rangers' performance in “runs per game” for the years prior to, during and after Ecker, measured in rank among 30 MLB teams and runs per game:

Giants
2019  28th (4.19 rpg, pre-Ecker)
2020  8th (4.98 rpg, first year of Ecker)
2021  6th (4.96 rpg, second and last year of Ecker)

To me, the evidence is clear. Ecker is an excellent hitting instructor.

Ecker is currently unemployed.

I know a team that could really, really use him.

RE: SF Giants 2025 - Mick - 06-28-2025

Giants lose their fourth 1-0 game of the season. Wisely gets picked off third base (got picked off first base last game).

Bring Ecker back.
