Who coined the phrase, and why?

I've never seen that comment, but my take is:

- Old school baseball
- Sweeping comment
- Invocation of Japanese terminology
- Personal, voluble style

So I'm going to guess Lefty O'Doul.

Has to do with a Yankee closer. So many to choose from. I’ll go with Joe Page

Why Yankee Closer? What does Cy Young have to do with a Yankee closer?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - terry - 05-07-2025

In 1977, the Yankees' closer, Sparky Lyle, won the Cy Young Award. In the off-season, the Yankees signed Rich Gossage and made him their closer, taking the job away from Lyle. At the end of the 1978 season, Lyle was traded. The Yankees' Graig Nettles cracked that Lyle had gone "from Cy Young to sayonara."

Thanks Terry.

Oh I like that one...

We have a winner!

San Francisco Giants Legend Willie Mays Honored at Wrigley Field Following Death

Mays played 179 games at Wrigley and hit 54 home runs there, hitting .342 with 146 RBIs.

Baseball Trivia, Rocky start edition:

As of yesterday, the Rockies were 6-28, putting them 17.5 games out of first place.  Only 1 team has had a worse 34-game start (and, shockingly it was not last year’s White Sox, who started 3-22, but won 5 of its next 9 games to end up at 8-26 at this point in the season).  Who were they?

Who holds the record for worst single season winning percentage?

BC

Is the answer to both questions the 1962 Mets?

It is the answer to neither.  The 34 game loser is more recent and the season-wide loser is older.  The 1962 Mets wound up 40-120 (.250) but there have been two worse teams in modern history.  Also, I should specify that I'm thinking of the modern era for the season wide most losing team.  The 1899 Cleveland Spiders were 20-134 (.134), but let's keep it to teams since 1900.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - terry - 05-08-2025

I think maybe the Philadelphia A's had a very low winning percentage somewhere around 1916?

The worst start to a season might have been the Orioles about 25 years ago?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - skip75 - 05-08-2025

The Baltimore Orioles lost their first 21 games in 1988, so they're a good candidate for the worst start.

Their predecessors, the St. Louis Browns had some pretty awful teams, so maybe a candidate for worst season record.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BostonCard - 05-08-2025

Yes, the 1988 Orioles (now 37 years ago, if you want to feel old) started 0-21, and were 5-29 at the 34 game mark.
And yes, the 1916 Philadelphia have the worst winning percentage of the modern era at 36-117 (.235).  Last year’s White Sox were the fifth worst team in the modern era, and the worst since the 62 Mets.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - Mick - 05-08-2025

The streakiest team in MLB history was probably the 1916 Giants.

That season, the Giants started out 2-13. Then, they won 17 in a row. They lost 11 of 12 in late August. They still hold the MLB record for the longest winning streak at 26 games between Sept 7 and Sept 30. And they lost four of five to close out the season.

I'm going to guess six. All by Giants pitchers...not that it's a bad thing. Lots of really good relievers blow saves. Here's the four career blown saves leaders:

Goose Gossage, 112
Rollie Fingers, 109
Jeff Reardon, 106
Lee Smith, 103

Who are the top two in MLB history with the most long hits. That’s a combined doubles and triples ?
