I've never seen that comment, but my take is:

- Old school baseball
- Sweeping comment
- Invocation of Japanese terminology
- Personal, voluble style

In 1977, the Yankees' closer, Sparky Lyle, won the Cy Young Award. In the off-season, the Yankees signed Rich Gossage and made him their closer, taking the job away from Lyle. At the end of the 1978 season, Lyle was traded. The Yankees' Graig Nettles cracked that Lyle had gone "from Cy Young to sayonara."

The Baltimore Orioles lost their first 21 games in 1988, so they're a good candidate for the worst start.

Their predecessors, the St. Louis Browns had some pretty awful teams, so maybe a candidate for worst season record.

Yes, the 1988 Orioles (now 37 years ago, if you want to feel old) started 0-21, and were 5-29 at the 34 game mark.
