Please, please, please tell me that Jump is a shooting guard.

Jump is known as a great shooter. I'm sure she can play the 2 guard if that's where she's needed.

Depends on her... wait for it... Jump shot.

This is very interesting from the Boneyard. Read the comments for more recruiting. Friends who have seen Daniels are very high on her and she’s top ranked. And we know Stanford is very interested

RE: WBB: Haley Jones commits to Stanford - pefloresjr - 11-28-2018

I felt pretty confident that Jones was a Stanford commit after I saw her likes of Stanford WBB posts on Twitter.  Her other likes were about other commits to a wide variety of schools and a lot of general great basketball play clips.  However, her likes of Stanford were long interview clips about this year's recruits where they talk about how wonderful their experience has been.  I think when it comes to 17 year olds, their twitter account is the biggest indicator of their thoughts.  I also felt that the delay for fire and smoke emergency showed a lot of character and wasn't at all concerned about the fact that her announcement was to be shown live on ESPN.  I got a little worried when the Monday announcement got pushed to Wednesday, but kept my hopes up that Geno or Oregon hadn't been able to pull off a last minute change of heart.  I didn't post any thoughts or hopes about it because I live in fear of the woofing gods.  So glad she is joining the Stanford family.

Note:  The video interview of her by the ESPN reporter asked the expected questions about the reasons she chose Stanford but couldn't avoid acting as a shill for UConn.  She asked Jones whether she felt any pressure to join UConn since the last two #1 players had gone there and whether she felt a pull to the Huskies star power.  Jones was gracious but made it clear that her heart was with Stanford.

Cheers,
Pete F.

I was super busy all morning and this is the first chance all day I had to check the news.

Yes yes yes yes yes!!!!!

If being away from the news makes it better, my path is clear!

All the best to Haley and the rest of our fantastic class. You’ll love Stanford!!

RE: WBB: Haley Jones commits to Stanford - 2006alum - 11-28-2018

It's weird that they list Jump as a PG. Her profile and recruiting film clearly indicate she's a 2 not a 1. And between Brown on the front end and Van Gytenbeek on the back end, we won't need her to be a PG either!

For me too. Great news and way to put an exclamation point on the day!

I think this was the post Bobk was quoting:

Quote:A great day and really exciting time for Stanford.

I'll add that I expect ESPN #13 for 2020 6'4" forward Dalayah Daniels to ultimately join #2 6'4" F Cameron Brink and #37 5'7" PG Jana Van Gytenbeek. That would leave 1 scholarship left, and I do think Stanford is very much in the mix for Paige Bueckers. That would make Stanford "scary good" good.

Although Haley Van Lith is from "Pac-12 country" and said to have a 4.0 GPA, there has not been any chatter about her and Stanford (somewhat surprisingly). And with Jana Van Gytenbeek already committed, Tara might focus elsewhere position-wise anyway.

This infusion of talent looks like it could make Stanford a national championship contender in a way that it has not been since around the '08-'12 era.

I believe Stanford would have been a heavy favorite for ESPN #22/PN #11 and U17 USA Team Member PG Charisma Osborne, but did not have room. Though ranked lower, SG Hannah Jump very much has the outside shot Stanford is known to love and usually flourish with, and "jumped" on her Stanford offer with a relatively early commitment.

RE: WBB: Haley Jones commits to Stanford - TheFarm07 - 11-28-2018

I checked this morning to see what Haley's decision was, but I did not get a chance to post here until now.

Like everyone else, I am very elated that she decided on Stanford. I've been on pins and needles for a while now, especially as she was not going to announce until the signing period and then she chose not to announce on the first day and then the California wildfires postponed that date until this morning.

Tara has always been a great strategic/tactical mind, but she did not always have the weapons at all 5 positions to match up with the elite teams we faced in the tournament. With the recruiting hauls she's had recently, she'll have plenty of elite options and I, for one, cannot wait to see how she utilizes everyone.

Think about this lineup on the floor during the 2019-20 season:

Kiana, Lexie, Haley, Cameron Brink and Maya Dodson

That would be all top-14 recruits coming out of high school with Lexie the lowest at #14 and would including three Top-10 recruits. It would also leave a bench of multiple Top-25 recruits in Belibi, Brown, Prechtel and others from the remaining 2 spots in next year's class.

If Tara is able to land Bueckers and/or Daniels, we could have 3 top-5 prospects on the floor at the same (based on the current rankings)

Wowwie. I hadn't thought that far ahead yet - that lineup rivals any I can remember in terms of recruiting rankings - the closest was 2009-10 when we had Appel (mid-top 10 I believe?), Nneka (#6), Pederson (#4), Pohlen (top 25?), but we had no fifth highly ranked player that year, and it ended in that horrible championship game against UConn where Appel's ankle basically gave out at the start and she was limping back and forth across the court, going 0-12 in her final college game. Oh how I would love to avenge that loss a decade later!

That is truly the one that got away.  They were clearly the best team and deserved to win that championship.  It still hurts that the injury to Appel kept that team from getting that final win.  I would love it if we can get back to that level.

Cheers,
Pete F.

Whoops, I got a little bit ahead of myself with the timing. I should have said the 2020-21 season since Brink is only a junior this year and won't graduate high school until spring of 2020.

But my point is still the same.

Yes, that one hurts, as well as the following season, where we swapped Appel for Chiney, in terms of highly ranked HS recruits and couldn't get pass Texas A&M in the national semis.

Appel was the No. 3 recruit in her class and Pohlen was No. 22 among her peers.

Quote:When longtime Mitty coach Sue Phillips addressed the crowd Wednesday, she described Jones as the “epitome of today’s position-less player.”

In other words, the 6-foot-1 senior has the skills to play all five positions on the court

Made me think of Nicole Powell.  I wonder if she will challenge Powell’s career Stanford record of 6 triple doubles.

Yippie-Skippie!

I'm thrilled to have Haley Jones come to Stanford.  I thought this years freshman class was great.  Now I can't wait for next year.

The ESPN Class Rankings list 20 schools, with Stanford now at #2.
http://www.espn.com/high-school/girls-basketball/recruiting/class-rankings/_/class/2019
I don't see UConn on the list of 20.  Is Geno losing his mojo?

UConn only had room for one recruit, who was still a Top 50 player. But since recruiting rankings depend on volume, that would probably explain why UConn is not ranked.

I'll bet if Stanford had a fifth recruit, even outside the Top 50, we'd be #1.

RE: WBB: Haley Jones commits to Stanford - BosCard - 11-29-2018

Hopefully the info below will help put into perspective how monumental the commitments of 2019 #1 Haley Jones and 2020 #2 Cameron Brink are.  Below is a list from the last 10 years of ESPN HoopGurlz's top 10 whom we were rumored to be recruiting.  As you can see it is a pretty short list.  Every year there are only 1 or 2 top 10 players who could possibly meet Stanford's entrance requirements.  Highlighted in red are the Stanford commits and players.  In the blue are the names of players whom we are pretty sure would have been admitted but decided to go elsewhere.  We don't really know how admissable the players in black were.  If you look at just top 3 players, there are just 3 players in the last 10 years (not sure if Brianna Turner was admissable or not).  Chiney chose Stanford and became a star.  And people on this board, many years later,  still bemoan the loss of Diggins and Samuelson#3.  So in any given year, there is a 10% chance that a top 3 player will be admissable.  And our hit rate was 33%.  So we have a 3.3% chance of landing a top 3 player.  And now we have done it 2 years in a row.  They will play together for 3 years.  And we have a shot at 2020 #1 Bueckers and 2021 #1 Fudd.  It is a good time to be a Stanford fan.

2009 - #3 Skylar Diggins, #10 Joslyn Tinkle
2010 - #1 Chiney Ogwumike, #4 Chelsea Gray
2011 - #10 Samantha Logic
2012 – None
2013 - #10 Oderah Chidom
2014 - #2 Brianna Turner, #4 Jordin Canada
2015 - #1 Katie Lou Samuelson, #9 Kyra Lambert
2016 - #5 Erin Boley
2017 - #8 Kiana Williams
2018 - #5 Olivia Nelson-Ododa

UConn has tons of room. They never come close to the max of 15 scholarship players. But Geno "has no plan B," and all but one of his 2019 targets went elsewhere, so he wound up with only one in the class.
