Stanford's proximity to her home was a factor for Jones -- being close enough for her parents and grandparents to attend home games will be nice -- but what set Stanford apart was everything the school offers off the court.
"This is more than a four-year decision," Jones said. "The degree means so much, going to Stanford."
Jones plans to study psychology and is interested in working in sports psychology. She is fascinated by how the brain can impact overcoming injury and how athletes can train their minds as well as their bodies.
"A big part of whatever sport you're in is the mental side of it, and we don't really train that part," Jones said.

This was a hard morning of anticipation.  A couple of you know I am the last person on earth not to carry a cell phone.  And at the time of the announcement I was inside a machine in the doctor's office.  So I had to wait an extra 90 minutes to find out the good news.

This is spectacular.  I really do think we have a good prospect of getting Tara another national championship over the next few years.  And it is not just Haley--but that whole class is amazing, as the next one will be too.

But you know something interesting?  As I thought about my own hope for Stanford WBB, I was probably hoping Haley would choose Stanford for her own sake. 

And of course she did.

Really happy for Jones.  Always had the feeling she was a Stanford lean.  Less so for the proximity to family / high school but mainly because she seemed like a Stanford student, someone who was excited about going to a great community of thinkers and being surrounded by classmates who will go on to start tech companies, find cures for cancer and win nobel prizes.  There was a passage in the ESPN article that eluded to that:

The diversity of the campus is something that excites Jones.  "Having diversity is really important for personal growth," Jones said. "You get to hear all of these different perspectives on important issues discussed in college. It's such an amazing opportunity to be immersed in this community."
