Wow! I typically don't care for commitment videos but this was great.

A surreal passer, incredible vision: Ricky Rubio II

The kid can't be criticized for thinking too small, but perhaps for having delusions of grandeur?

Best to ever play in the NBA is quite ambitious.

I guess we shouldn't be shocked if he too leaves for the NBA as quickly as he can. Guess that's just the way of the world with college hoops now, even at Stanford.

Williams is almost certainly a one and done. If Terry comes back I expect he will go as well. Davis & da Silva are in their last years of eligibility.

Next season is make or break for Haase, with or without Terry.

For the record, according to someone super close to the team, Haase's job is not even close to "make or break."

RE: MBB recruiting - Papa John - 04-23-2020

In winflop's defense, he was probably referring to his own opinion--not Muir's--given the expectations for MBB even without Terry. Having said that, even if next season ends up like the most recent, i.e. NIT-bound, I would vote to give Haase a chance to develop the younger players who stay in school beyond 2020-21 and see if he can continue his recruiting success.

This past season was the first in which Stanford has had a talented, true point guard since 2003-2004 when Chris Hernandez was here. (In Trent Johnson's infinite wisdom, he moved him to shooting guard for Chris' last two years, but that's another story.) The point (pun intended) is that, no matter how good of a coach you are, unless you have obscene talent at the other four positions, you're not going to have much success with a middling point guard. Hopefully Terry will return. Regardless, I think we can assume Isa Silva will be around for at least one season beginning in 2021-2022. And the way Haase is now recruiting, he'll (hopefully) continue to bring in talented point guards.

Nice long article about Isa Silva and his commitment: https://www.sacbee.com/sports/high-school/article242352681.html

I hadn't know that his cousin was a team manager for MBB.  Never hurts to have an insider.

I wish he could figure out a way to take some online classes and reclassify to class of 2020 to graduate early to join the team in the fall. We could use him if Terry stays in the draft.

RE: MBB recruiting - fullmetal - 04-30-2020

Kowacie Reeves Jr. has committed to Florida.

RE: MBB recruiting - Papa John - 05-06-2020

It looks like 247sports.com has released its final top 150 MBB recruiting rankings, and Stanford's class of 2020 is looking solid (listings are formatted as national rankings for 247sports/247sports composite):

Ziaire Williams (4/5), consensus 5 stars, #1 SF per 247sports
Max Murrell (79/118), consensus 4 stars, #14 PF
Brandon Angel (123/213), 4 star for 247sports, 3 star for composite, #25 PF
Noah Taitz (219/169), consensus 3 stars, #32 SG

Of course, the noticeable omission for the incoming class is point guard.

Per the 247sports composite, Stanford's MBB class is ranked #15 nationally, #2 in the Pac-12 (behind Arizona). Of course, these rankings will change between now and if/when the school year starts. For example, at the moment, Oregon and UCLA have only one 2020 commit each. However, the vast majority of the top 150 players have committed or decided to turn pro. Again, per 247sports composite, the only undecided players are #16, #61, #106, #107, #111, #121, #122, #143, #150. (I'm assuming that there are still quality transfers out there as well, although  I don't think they would be included in the recruiting class rankings for 2020.)

For those looking ahead to 2021, Stanford MBB commit Isael Silva is the #4 rated PG at the moment.

RE: MBB recruiting - SamuelMcF - 05-06-2020

Taitz that low is a crime. (It makes sense though since he was injured for all but 1 game of his senior season.) And he's more of a combo guard rather than a strict SG.

RE: MBB recruiting - Papa John - 05-07-2020

SamuelMcF, of course you bring up a great point about Taitz. The star rankings are useful, but not perfect predictors. Per 247sports composite, here are the overall national HS recruit rankings of Stanford MBB players since the mid-2000s who have played in the NBA:

2006--Brook Lopez (10), Robin Lopez (23), Landry Fields (245)
2010--Dwight Powell (34), Anthony Brown (64), Josh Huestis (187)
2011--Chasson Randle (62)
2017--KZ Okpala (42)

Regardless of the reasons, it's safe to say that the recruit rankings were big misses on Landry Fields and Josh Huestis.

RE: MBB recruiting - BobK - 05-07-2020

Thank you BL82. Great list to see

I subscribed to something way back. Can’t recall what. Football has three I subscribed to.

RE: MBB recruiting - Papa John - 05-07-2020

Thanks b82, but your list only includes the top 100 nationally for a given year? I don't see a number of Stanford enrollees, including Landry Fields or Josh Huestis.

Only the top 100 based on a weighted average consensus across the various rating services, so there are sure to be individual rating services that had other players in various top 100 lists.

RE: MBB recruiting - Treebound - 05-07-2020

Great list BL82.
Seeing that list brought back many fond memories!  A few challenging ones as well...

What was Okafor's ranking??!

As for next year, if we don't get to the Dance, my streak of season ticket renewals may well come to a close.   Haase is recruiting well, yes, but it's Time to get us back to the Dance.
