Taitz can play a bit too. He got meaningful minutes in both games we recently won. He can shoot the 3, which sometimes we really need. He is just getting back to "normal" after a year where he was injured. I think he has more upside for the future.

As a bonus, ESPN put an excellent commentating team on the broadcast, Jay Bilas and someone whose name I missed. That was the polar opposite of the usual Bill Walton babblefest!

Dan Shulman, I believe. Yes, good team and commentary.

Jay Bilas sent a lot of love to Michael O'Connell on the broadcast. Deservedly so.

RE: MBB win @ Arizona: STAN 73 AZ 64 - winflop - 01-29-2021

Last week in Pauley was a really nice win but as has been with this program for many years I always tell myself "Let's see if they can put 2 performances in a row together like this." Question answered in spades. This was a great win tonight, arguably the biggest since upsetting Kansas to reach the Sweet 16.

O'Connell has been nothing short of awesome. He does what a PG should do - he doesn't turn it over.

I feel badly for Williams dealing with a death in the family but as a fan I'm glad to hear it's not injury related. Hopefully he returns soon and plays at 100% going forward.

Davis & Wills please get healthy. This is a potential Sweet 16 team with its full complement of players. Great defense and now Haase has been able to develop some depth too.

The turnover thing is important, as turnovers are one of the main weaknesses of this team (along with 3-pt shooting, and to a lesser extent 3-pt shooting defense).

Stanford is still last in the conference in TOs per game, but it seems to be getting better.

Stanford
TO seaspm avg = 15.3
TO first 8 gms  = 16.4
TO last 7 gms   = 14.1
TO last 5 gms   = 13.0

Kisunas really deserves the recognition he is getting.  In two very important games, he doesn't foul, he plys very tough defense against two good big men and simply does not get pushed around.  His play has also probably made life easier for Da Silva to play his game instead of having to focus a great amount of energy taking the other teams big man.

Also props to Coach Haase and his staff for finding Kisunas, Jones and O'Connell, all three star recruits signed late in the cycle.

Outside of the win, the best part was not having to listen to Walton's slobbering drivel

Stunning stats on O'Connell. What makes his TO stat even more amazing to me is the kinds of passes he makes. Every game he makes tough, pinpoint passes that you'd expect to cause more turnovers now and then. Ever since his first game he's also been so poised. Can't believe he's a first-year.

I love DD and BW, and really want them back, BUT they both were known for reckless passes and TOs. Less a criticism of those guys and more a compliment to O'Connell and the current starting five.

RE: MBB win @ Arizona: STAN 73 AZ 64 - Papa John - 01-29-2021

The NCAA's NET rankings are still not convinced that the Stanford men are for real. We moved up from 58 to 53 after last night's win over UA.

Remaining schedule with NET/Quadrant rankings as of today:
@ ASU--NET 120/Quadrant 2
vs USC--23/1
@ Cal--174/3
vs Cal--174/4
vs Colorado--17/1
vs Utah--106/3
@ UW--194/3
@ WSU--124/2
@ USC--23/1
vs Oregon--51/2
vs Oregon State--146/3

Note that quadrants change with NET rankings, so it's really the end of season NET rankings that matter. For the sake of argument, I'm going to assume that these rankings remain stable.

Being a bubble team, Stanford probably needs to achieve the following to ensure an NCAA bid:
1-2 in remaining Quadrant 1 games (currently 2-4)
2-1 in remaining Quadrant 2 games (currently 2-1)
4-0 in remaining Quadrant 3 games (currently 3-0)
1-0 in the remaining Quadrant 4 game (currently 3-0)

That would put Stanford at 18-8 (14-6), with a 3-6 record versus Q1 and 4-2 record versus Q2 teams. 14-6 should be good enough to ensure an opening round game against a quadrant 3 or 4 team (must win!) in the Pac-12 tournament.

RE: MBB win @ Arizona: STAN 73 AZ 64 - burger - 01-29-2021

Here's a hypothetical (for now): everyone on the team is healthy.  Who starts?

I'd go with:
Da Silva
Jones
Wills
Davis
Delaire

And the first guy who makes the slightest mistake gets subbed out for O'Connell.

I love Williams, but I don't think he's one of the top 6 players on the team right now.

And I can back it up.  I messed around with this lineup explorer and compared lineups with each guy on and off the court.  It's not a perfect measure because of teammate effects, but it's a good start.

Delaire is by far the best player on the team so far (+17 net rating in points per 100 possessions).  Followed by Wills (+9.1), Da Silva (+8.7), and Jones (+4.7).  Williams is +3.5.  Davis is -1.1, but he seemed to be playing better just before the injury.

Matchups may change who should start from game to game, but those 5 are our best right now.

RE: MBB win @ Arizona: STAN 73 AZ 64 - AlbanyCardinal - 01-29-2021

Great stuff, thanks for sharing that lineup explorer link. For me, Da Silva, Delaire, and Jones are cemented as starters. Wills is such a defensive force, it's hard for me keep him out of the starting lineup. DD has been one of my favorite players since he came to the Farm. He's carried this team more than a few times. All that said, I still find myself leaning toward O'Connell as the fifth starter. He quietly steadies the team and makes so many good things happen.

In any case, to have so much depth -- assuming some of the walking wounded return -- is a good problem to have. To think of having ZW, DD, BW,  and/or O'Connell to bring in from the bench?

O’Connell must start. Interesting what might happened.

I can see starting O'Connell over Davis.  O'Connell is a better passer/creator. Davis is better as a SG anyway, like last year when Terry was PG.  I don't see how you sit Wills with his ability to shut down people on defense.

Anyway, I wonder how Haase and the staff will see it.  Hopefully whoever the odd guy(s) out are will be okay with what's decided.

RE: MBB win @ Arizona: STAN 73 AZ 64 - AlbanyCardinal - 01-29-2021

I second the recruiting props to Haase and his staff. But I'd forgotten that Kisunas was such a coveted recruit. One of the commentators last night mentioned he'd first committed to UConn, then decommitted after a coaching change, ultimately choosing Stanford over Arizona. He's shown some stuff the last few games that, honestly, I didn't think he had in his arsenal. Delaire's rise has grabbed a lot of attention, and rightly so, but Kisunas is coming along nicely, which bodes well for the rest of the season and beyond.

RE: MBB win @ Arizona: STAN 73 AZ 64 - needle - 01-29-2021

Haase has some tough decisions to make, but as a fan I'm not going to worry about it too much. We don't even know for sure when these guys are coming back to play.

RE: MBB win @ Arizona: STAN 73 AZ 64 - AlbanyCardinal - 01-29-2021

That, and even when they do start returning, it won't be as starters right out of the gate (with the exception of maybe ZW, since he's not injured). They'll need to be eased back in, for the sake of their health and team chemistry. Here's hoping they get cleared to play soon.

Agree with the love on Kisunas defensively (and his opening up Oscar to knock around a smaller F instead of a true C), but he has committed a foul every 6 minutes he's been on the court this season. 3 in each of the last 2 games, though they came in many many more minutes so technically they were in fact his "cleanest" games of the season.

Ziaire leads the team with 3.5 TOs per game. Nobody else is above 3. Some of his passes make me think he's still trying what worked against hopelessly-outmatched high schoolers. Oscar also turns the ball over more than DD and BW do - 2.8/game to 2.3/game for both. In fact, this was DD's most turnover-free season to date. He got better at it every year.

On O'Connell: Not sure how many on this board remember, but Haase and co were about to sign a Polish C to round out the freshman class upon Terry's declaration. Only when that fell through due to Covid restrictions on international test-taking did we end up flipping O'Connell's lacrosse commitment to Maryland even later. The Polish kid currently plays garbage time minutes at Utah State. Sometimes things work out!

Sort of like the opposite of what happened with Emeka Okafor, who was interested in Stanford but committed to UConn when Jason Collins took his time before declaring for the NBA draft.

Interesting. Makes sense re: ZW. He was quite TO-prone and the numbers prove it. It's interesting to me that losing those three starters offered some possibility for addition by subtraction. Not throwing any of those guys under the bus, but others have emerged to pick up the slack, to get better with experience, and to make for what I'll call a tighter style of play. This is a testament to Haase's remarkable recruiting, b/c few teams could lose three key starters and maintain (or even improve) team success.
