RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - BobK - 05-23-2021

Ye with an eagle. She’s now 4 under today

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - BostonCard - 05-23-2021

We are now 10 strokes clear of second place Texas, 22 strokes ahead of the 9th place team, and 33 strokes clear of the cutline.

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - BostonCard - 05-23-2021

Ye has birdied the last four holes.  She's -7 through 14 holes and has pulled into second place individually, behind only Heck.  Stanford is -9 for the day, -16 to par, and 17 strokes ahead of second place Duke.

These are the kinds of results that make me a bit wary of match play.  The team is dominant in stroked play in a way that I don't think any women's golf team of recent vintage has been, and yet anything can happen in match play.  It would be a real shame if these women didn't win it all.

I don't follow golf that closely.  I plan to watch on TV tomorrow.  I'm guessing all the players' scores up to and including today are thrown out so it doesn't matter if a team finishes in first place today or just makes the cut.

Ok, thanks for the response. So the scores are thrown out after tomorrow's play and it does help to finish first because the teams are seeded in brackets.

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - BostonCard - 05-23-2021

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the scores are not thrown out (just the teams below the cut are dropped), so the team is looking pretty good to make match play; we are 32 strokes in front of the 9th place team with a little over 1 round to go.  Once we go to match play, though, the scores from the championship play are thrown out, and we will be matched with the 8th place team.  If we win, we would get paired up with the 4/5 winner, and if we make it to the final, it would be against whoever emerges from the other side of the bracket.

Correct. Field cut to 15 after today, but you carry over your score for final round, after which top 8 make match play.

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - BostonCard - 05-23-2021

There is a chasm between Stanford and everybody else.  -12 for the day, -19 for the tournament.  We are the only team below par this tournament and have a 21 stroke lead over #2 Duke, a 35 stroke cushion in front of 9th place, and are clear of the cutline by 44 strokes.

Rachel Heck didn’t break 70 today. Time to replace her with our substitute...

TV coverage tomorrow on The Golf Channel will run from 2-6 pm Pacific. They usually spend a lot of air time on the race for the individual title. We can expect a lot of Stanford time on screen since Cardinal golfers are currently 1st, 2nd and 5th.

I heard other teams were saying "What the heck is going on here?"

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - Spiny_Norman - 05-23-2021

Stanford begins the 4th round tomorrow at 11:38 am pacific. Rachel Heck leads the individual competition by 5 shots. Going back to 1982, the first year for NCAA women's golf, no Stanford player has ever been an NCAA individual champion.

The surprise result so far was the play of USC. They beat Stanford by 5 shots to win Pac 12s, were ranked in the top 10 and have a ton of NCAA experience. But they finished 23rd out of 24 teams, 61(!) shots behind Stanford. Needless to say, they missed the cut for the final round. This year will break the Trojans' streak of qualifying for match play every year. The only other school to qualify for match play every year - Stanford.

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - Hulk01 - 05-24-2021

For the six rounds--regionals and nationals:

Heck, 68.5
Ye, 69.5
Seay, 71.3
Krauter, 72.7
Englemann, 73.0

Over that span, this team is averaging 17.55 strokes per round less than the average team.
And each player is averaging ~4.2 strokes better than the average opposing player.

That's crazy.

And over the next two seasons, they land the world's best amateur, Rose Zhang, and the number one American golfer in the 2023 class, Meghan Ganne.

The other surprise was the other USC.  The #1 ranked team in the country eeked into the cut after finishing the first day in last place.  They start the day six strokes out of match play.

5 out of the 15 remaining teams are from the P12.

That's not a good thing, is it?
Don't the golf cognoscenti think that South Carolina has the horses/talent to beat Stanford in match play setting?
I was hoping they would not make it, or if they did, that Stanford would not have to play them out of the gate.

South Carolina is not gaining any ground today. They are currently 13th, 11 strokes behind the 8th place team. Their chances of making the match play round don't look good at the moment.

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - BostonCard - 05-24-2021

So far, yuck.  Stanford is far enough ahead of the field that going +5 while our nearest rival is shooting -1 cuts the lead down to 12 strokes.  Heck's lead in the individual tournament is down to 3 strokes, ahead of teammate Angelina Ye.

Hope they all get the yips out of them today, because tomorrow is match play, where anything can happen.

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - oldalum - 05-24-2021

double yuck. Our +8 so far is next to last in the field, and Heck's lead is down to 1. But lots of golf still to play--hopefully better.
