Shaw’s big advantage was that after dealing with two years of “will he or won’t he”, a successful alum could make Stanford a destination job.  Fangio always had designs on returning to the NFL, and even after following Harbaugh to San Francisco, he did not follow Harbaugh to Michigan, but stayed in the NFL to DC the Bears, and then head coach the Broncos.

Hazy memory, but wasn't Roman a possibility?
Yes, he applied for the job.

Well said, Phoggemeister.

Hmm, maybe Freeman was the real reason ND has been so much better of late than in the purple-faced one's earlier days. How long has he been there?

This is a fascinating article on this topic. The Sporting News breaks recent college football head coach hirings into categories (hired from a coordinator in college, hired from the nfl, hired from a competitor, etc) and while the data can be skimpy or not-yet-determined, it’s still an intersting bit of work.

FWIW, promoting a coordinator to HC within seems to be one of the most successful, Home Run laden ways to pick the next coach.

I wouldn’t already be celebrating Notre Dame’s pick, that seems… premature. I see a lot of positive statements on how Freeman coaches with character and charisma, and has a mastery of defense. If he can get the right assistants, especially on offense, that is a dangerous combination.

He has a head start on offense. A five star dual QB set to start, the best TE in the country, several good RB’s and the usual wealth of O linemen.

Eat your hearts out. I remember when Stanford owned these guys. Back when the Earth had just cooled.
