Seems like suspending the tree for this just proves his point.  Also telling that the sign was displayed in front of the virtually empty student section.  I'll bet more were in the library than at the game having fun.

Doubt that. These days there is no reason to go to the library. Virtually everything you need you can find on the net. That's why (at least in part) they didn't rebuild the UGLY.

RE: Stanford tree suspended - M T - 10-31-2022

Quote:A Stanford athletic department spokesperson confirmed the suspension, stating, "The students comprising the executive committee of the LSJUMB have suspended the Tree mascot due to a violation of the band's policies and processes."
  (ESPN)

Let's stop extending the confusing statement by Tree #44  "Stanford has decided to suspend the Tree".  I see several responses here that may think, perhaps from the subject of this thread (currently "Stanford tree suspended") that the student who is Tree #44 is suspended from Stanford.  That isn't the case.   (Note that the ESPN article is also loose with the word "suspension".)
@MODERATORS: I suggest a change of subject to "Stanford tree suspended from LSJUMB" or something like that.

I also feel the word "hate" is being weakened by its use here.  There are plenty of more impactful "hates" that should have our attention.  Is the alleged attitude of Stanford really hate?  I don't think so.

If the band suspended the Tree for stating that the University hates fun, it's no longer the band I once knew.  The band has long been known as anti-authoritarian.  I guess they'll start goose stepping soon.

What are the odds that the University would have stepped aside and not done anything had the band not suspended the tree?

Exactly. Band leadership made the pre-emptive strike before worse sanctions could be handed down by the U. They weren't happy with Rogue Tree, according to ex-band JJJ-jr.

Like I said, not the band I once knew.  Doing the U's dirty work?  They were once all about free speech.  Might as well just buy the damned band unis and fall in line.

It hasn't been the band you once knew since they were banned. Having to now operate within a bunch of bureaucratic rules and restrictions or cease to operate... I feel bad for them.

I think the U should consider a ban on dancing.  We all know what dancing leads to . . .

BTW, I think the Tree's banner was perfectly appropriate at a home football game.  It's fun to cheer for a winning football team.  It's no fun to watch your team lose. Stanford has done nothing to halt the decline of the football program under Coach Shaw.  Therefore, Stanford must hate fun.

This is how it always has worked with student-run organizations.  You’re allowed to be student-run at the pleasure of the University and if you lose control of your organization, they will step in.  Was this way 3 decades ago, nothing new here.  In the past the Band has kicked out a trombone player for deliberately botching a formation in a word-scramble show so a 4-letter word was the only solution, prohibited the OJ rally band members from performing in that weekend’s field show in LA, fired the announcers for going off-script with some inappropriate Hebrew, and suspended an incoming Tree for showing a little too much during his Maples introduction.  Nothing new here except the ability of social media to amplify the heck out of the follow-up.

Good grief. As an ex-band member once extolled: "What the f--k happened to the Band I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? This could be the greatest night of our lives, but you're gonna let it be the worst. 'Ooh, we're afraid to go with you, Tree, we might get in trouble.' (shouting) Well, just kiss my ass from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this. . . ."

I stand with the tree. . . .

Where is H Bruce Franklin in this hour of need?

The article is really interesting. I'm stunned by the bureaucracy that students need to go through just to have a party. I'm even more stunned that so many are afraid to comment on the story for fear of retribution and retaliation from the University. What has Stanford become?

RE: Stanford tree suspended - gailtate - 11-01-2022

On certain campuses in the 1920s, there was a crack-pot theory that the saxophone was a problematic instrument. That the mere sound of the horn could have a aphrodisiac effect on young women. Predictably, it was proposed by some folks that school bands should prohibit its use. Happily, saner heads prevailed and so did the sax. Fun ensued. No record of any saxual anti-fun issues on the Farm during this time.

RE: Stanford tree suspended - Phogge - 11-01-2022

All we had to do when on a date with girls from Mercy, Pres and St. Rose was bring along a sax. Worked every time.

Fun? At FB games? So much for the "fun factor" at games this year. And the year before. And the year before that. And the year before that...

I like the fading effect!

Looks like this was the Band's decision.
