RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah Saturday 11am - martyup - 02-24-2023

I hope Tara let the team sleep all day with an evening shoot around.  Don't forget, these are young adults.  They don't sleep much.  Some of us remember when we were in our 20s and could stay out to the wee hours at the disco?  I recall in the 80s dancing at Club Ku in Ibiza until sunrise and then hitting an outdoor cafe for cappuccino and toast with marmalade.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah Saturday 11am - 81alum - 02-24-2023

As we contemplate the travel difficulties of getting to Boulder and SLC, or Pullman, just remember, it could be a lot worse.  What if we had to travel in winter to places like Minneapolis, East Lansing, Champaign, Lincoln, and Iowa City?  And what if we had to do it on every away trip?

Yah, suck on that U$C and UCLA.

The team slept in a gym or something like that, then flew on to Seattle and lost to U W, their only loss of the season. Yep, after that, they went on to win all the way, taking Stanford's first natty. And another similarity, at least tying to the reveal of yesterday, the loss to Wash was to a team that wound up being a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament, along with Stanford. The last time the Pac-12 (or whatever it was 30 plus years ago) had two #1 seeds.

Heh. Tara would appreciate that omen!

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah Saturday 11am - martyup - 02-24-2023

I wouldn't mind us dropping this game so long as it doesn't cost us a #1 seed in the Big Dance.  I think it would be great if the Pac-12 got two #1 seeds and if UT beats us they might solidify their #1 seed.

Currently dining at Lazy Bear in SF with my wife for our anniversary and "All Right Now" immediately came on the radio when we first sat down. I feel like that bodes well!

Always a great sign!!

I’ll be driving South from Portland tomorrow, weather willing.

Does anyone know where I can stream audio for this game?  KZSU has disappointed me lately on away games.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah Saturday 11am - chrisk - 02-24-2023

The professional audio is on the Varsity Network app/website. It is a collection of all the college broadcasts handles for most of the top athletic departments. Don’t know if KZSU is doing the game.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah Saturday 11am - warren65 - 02-25-2023

81 has provided a comprehensive review of today’s game.  I am adding my 2 cents here.

Utah should be favored because:

It is undefeated at home and has the home-court advantage, including the tendency of referees to call more fouls on the opponent, and whatever psychological advantage players get from the home fans and familiarity with the arena.

Utah is more accustomed to playing at altitude.  At 4780 feet, the Huntsman Center (in the hills above Salt Lake City) is only 620 feet lower than the CU Events Center in Boulder.

Utah is the highest scoring team in the conference and has the highest % of 3 point conversions.  Alissa  Pili is a creative post player difficult to stop and complements the outside shooters with their sophisticated three point offense with screening, pick and roll, etc.

Utah has whatever advantage that flows from the travel difficulties and sleep deprivation from Stanford’s trip from Boulder.

Here’s why Stanford still might prevail.

Stanford leads the conference in field goal defense and is third in three-point defense.  It has a height advantage that allows a lot of switching with good communication on defense.  Most of its perimeter defenders are tall and still play consistent smart defense (Jones, Jump, Iriafen, Demetre, and Belibi are all six feet or taller – and Emma Nnopu is 5’11”)

Stanford leads the conference in scoring margin and rebounding margin.

Stanford has two creative scorers in All American candidates Brink and Jones complemented by superior depth.   Betts is a handful.  Three-point scorer Jump can be stopped, but only with a glued-on defender.  Wild cards can have breakout performances on any given day: Lepolo, Nivar, Emma Nnopu, Demetre,  Belibi , and Prechtel (five of those six players come off the bench).

My prediction:  A hard fought, tournament quality game.  Motivation will be high on both sides.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah Saturday 11am - martyup - 02-25-2023

We beat them handily at Maples and Betts didn't play at all.  Brink fouled out with a few minutes remaining in the game.  Most of her fouls were on offense.

Since that game, Betts has become an important part of our offensive scheme.  Hopefully, she will give us a boost when Brink has to come out.  Betts will have a big height advantage against Pili on offense, but I don't think Betts can defend her on defense.  Pili is too quick with her spin move under the basket.  The way we stop Pili is with a quick double team when she spins.  Haley did a good job helping Cameron with that when we played them at Maples.

Stats show that Agnes is going to start over Kiki.  Better 3 point defense?

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah Saturday 11am - crackpot - 02-25-2023

Looks like Agnes is starting in place of Kiki.

Watching the Pac-12 pre-game program. I knew that there had been a travel problem from Denver but got more detail from the broadcast, including that the charter flight was canceled and they had to wait for another plane to arrive. And what plane was it? Well, the plane taking the USC (!!!) men home took off as they were waiting at the airport, then had to come back from LA to pick up the Stanford women. At least that's the way I heard the story. The USC men, who had played Colorado AFTER the women's game. So the Card waits, and waits.  I could say more, but the mods might not like it!

Motivation is always a big part of big games like this one.  Unfortunately, there is more at stake for UT than Stanford.  I think they will be more motivated, and I know they will be more rested.  I'm prepared to accept the L.

No slow start today.

Another offensive foul on Brink setting a screen.  I wish they would take that out of our offensive strategy.

Not happy we only scored 17 in the 1st.

Happy we held UT to 15.

GO CARD!

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah Saturday 11am - 81alum - 02-25-2023

Well, that was a better first quarter than in our last game, and better than I expected.  A very, very, very long ways to go.  Nice to see Bosgana, Nivar, Emma-Nnopu, Belibi getting time to help with the energy levels.  11 players in one quarter.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah Saturday 11am - martyup - 02-25-2023

Energy level of our team is good so far.

3rd foul on Pili early in the 2nd Q.

Yeah we lead 17-15 with Brink and Jones having a combined 3 points between them. Not sure whether that is good or bad.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah Saturday 11am - MV72018 - 02-25-2023

Pili with 2 PFs is big. May sit for rest of quarter. No points by Brink or Jones so far?! Yikes!

2 on Brink and 3 on Pili. Both to sit?

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah Saturday 11am - Hoops9092 - 02-25-2023

Guessing Pili is likely the frontrunner for Pac-12 POY given her 20 ppg and Utah's rise to the top 2 spot in the conference, correct?

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah Saturday 11am - 81alum - 02-25-2023

Pili and Reese each with 3 PFs.  Brink and Jones each with 2.  All four are sitting.
