As expected, Mad Dog is the new weenie coach.

I am not happy that Madsen is at Haas while Haase is still at Maples.
I can only guess that if Madsen does well at UCB Muir will be asked every day for the rest of his time at Stanford why exactly he missed that opportunity to hire Madsen.

Time will tell on Madsen, but I wish him luck; I hope he is successful.

He’s gonna need it. If you think the AD and Administration is a problem at Stanford it pales to what is going on at Cal.

No guarantee that Haase is fired next year (I mean, he should be, but Muir has been uniquely reluctant to let underperforming coaches go), nor is it a guarantee that if Haase were let go that we would hire Madden. And lastly your last statement could also apply to Stanford.

In short, few people here have much confidence that Muir would do anything that would offer hope to Stanford basketball, whether firing or hiring. I wonder if that's just the way Muir is wired or whether Stanford gave him the word that's the way they want things done. P.S. It's now official, Madsen is the new coach of Cal basketball. I thought he'd be a great hire to replace Haase. He's smart, full of energy, charismatic, has NBA experience (including a championship), and will get players to run through walls for him. Why am I not surprised that Muir would blow another one.

Firing a coach would bring negative publicity which the higher ups want to avoid, they dodge a bullet of sort when David Shaw resigned.

If Haase is fired say next year or in two years, who's to say Madsen wouldn't leave Cal and take the Stanford job then? Coaching contracts really mean nothing and unless he's somehow built them into a powerhouse by then, I think he'd leave Cal for Stanford. Granted, I wish he was the head coach now and Haase was long gone.

Yeah, but then how would we ever get the weenie stink off of him.

Oftentimes there is a buyout involved. There are those that would argue that is all that saved Wilcox, he was too costly to fire. I would imagine Madsen got at least a 5 year contract, but he may have also have accepted a relatively large buyout in exchange for "guaranteed" money. If Knowlton was competent, I would bet heavily on it, because the scenario of him leaving for Stanford is an obvious "risk". Given that he apparently isn't competent, Madsen may have a "cheap" buyout. That may clearly affect what is possible in a year or two.

Back before I was a WBB fan, I was a Mike Montgomery/Todd Lichti fan. Mark Madson was fabulous as a player. I haven't followed his coaching career since, but if we hired him, I would have watched Stanford MBB for a year to see how he did. Now, I won't.

I do not get the need to get all hyped up about the woulda, coulda, shoulda in men's basketball. Did Muir make a mistake, most probably, will he learn from his mistake, who knows, but doubtful. At this point I think those of us who are serious fans of Stanford Basketball should focus on a few things at this point, will Spencer get into a graduate program and decide to return to Stanford for his last year and will Harrison elect to return for a 3rd year? If we get at least one of those two back we will probably have the best starting 5 since Haase got here and there would be no excuse for not making the NCAA. Failing that he has to be gone, but right now we should focus on what gives us the chance to have the best possible team next season. I don't see hoping for failure as sensible approach to any endeavor.
Also congrats to Angel and M. Jones for making Academic All American. Its an achievement worth noting.
If you have to focus on what is wrong at Stanford, there are people much farther up the management ladder you should focus on replacing.

Did that last year, and we got more of the same. I'm not hoping for failure (and I doubt anyone else on this board is either), I just have no expectations for success no matter who's on the court

it does not appear that making the NCAA tournament has been a significant factor in the continued employment of our men's basketball coaches for 15 years...
